About Surah Al-A'raf

Described by the Prophet (ﷺ) as "the longer of the two long ones," this 206-verse late Makkan address overturns the polytheism of the Quraysh. It carries titles reflecting its specific markers: Sūrat al-Mīqāt for the appointment of Moses, and Sūrat al-Mīthāq for the primordial covenant. Its primary name, Al-A'raf, refers to "The Heights," as it is the sole chapter to name the unique inhabitants of this realm.

The text opens with the creation of Adam and the origins of Satan's enmity. It then moves to vivid scenes of the Resurrection, contrasting the fates of the wicked, the pious, and the People of the Heights. From there, the focus shifts to the struggles of earlier Messengers, dedicating an extensive section to Moses and the Israelites that includes glad tidings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

As the historical accounts conclude, the address exposes the powerlessness of the Arabs' idols. The final verses ground this sweeping timeline into immediate directives, commanding the Muslims to maintain patience, continue their call to God, and seek refuge from the devil through remembrance.

This Book has been sent down to you [Prophet]––let there be no anxiety in your heart because of it––so that you may use it to give warning and to remind the believers:

How many towns We have destroyed! Our punishment came to them by night or while they slept in the afternoon:

١١
We created you, We gave you shape, and then We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they did. But not Iblis: he was not one of those who bowed down.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
مَا

God said, ‘What prevented you from bowing down as I commanded you?’ and he said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and him from clay.’

١٦
And then Iblis said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in wait for them all on Your straight path:

١٧
I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left- and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

God said, ‘Get out! You are disgraced and banished! I swear I shall fill Hell with you and all who follow you!

Satan whispered to them so as to expose their nakedness, which had been hidden from them: he said, ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree to prevent you becoming angels or immortals,’
