How Are Prayer Times Calculated?

Calculation Method
Muslim World League
Madhab
Shafi
Calendar Authority
Saudi Arabia (Official Sighting)

Islamic prayer times are determined by the sun's position. The most widely adopted methods include the Muslim World League (MWL), Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, and the Egyptian General Authority of Survey.

For Asr, we offer both standard (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) and Hanafi methods. The standard method starts Asr when an object's shadow equals its height; the Hanafi method delays it until the shadow is twice the object's height.

Compare with your local masjid so congregational prayers stay in step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the five daily Islamic prayer times?

The five obligatory daily prayers are Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). Their times are set by the sun's position through the day, giving Muslims worldwide a structured spiritual routine.

How is Fajr time calculated?

Fajr begins at true dawn (al-Fajr al-Sadiq), when the first light appears across the eastern horizon. Astronomically the sun is 15–18 degrees below the horizon, depending on the calculation method.

Why do prayer times change daily?

Prayer times depend on the sun's position, which shifts through the year with the Earth's tilt and orbit. Days lengthen in summer and shorten in winter, so dawn, noon and sunset move with your location and the season.

What is the difference between Hanafi and Shafi Asr times?

The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools start Asr when an object's shadow equals its height; the Hanafi school waits until the shadow is twice the height. Follow the method your local mosque uses.

Can I pray salah before the prescribed time?

No. Each prayer must be performed within its own time window — praying before the time begins renders it invalid, and it must be repeated once the time has truly entered.
