What is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam: an annual duty of 2.5% on wealth that has stayed at or above the nisab for one lunar (Hijri) year. It purifies wealth and is distributed to the eight categories of recipients named in the Quran (At-Tawbah 9:60).
Which nisab should I use?
The nisab is the minimum wealth that makes zakat obligatory: 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab, because its lower threshold means more reaches those in need; it is the safer choice when your wealth mixes cash, gold and goods.
Zakat
A year, then again
Zakat falls due when a full lunar year has passed over wealth that stayed above the nisab. The Hijri calendar is how you know the day.
