Frequently Asked Questions
What is qaza (qada) prayer?
Qaza, also written qada, means praying an obligatory prayer after its time has ended. The Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools agree that a missed fard prayer stays owed until it is prayed. The basis is the hadith "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it" (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
How do I work out how many prayers I owe?
Count the days from when you became accountable (baligh) and stopped praying to the day you started again, then multiply by the five daily fard prayers. This calculator does that for you: it counts every calendar day from the start date to the end date, removes any excused days, and gives the count for each prayer.
Is Witr counted as a qaza prayer?
In the Hanafi school Witr is wajib, so a missed Witr is made up (al-Hidayah by al-Marghinani). In the Shafi'i school Witr is a confirmed sunnah, not fard (al-Minhaj by al-Nawawi). Turn the Witr option on or off to match your madhhab.
Do I make up prayers missed during menstruation or postnatal bleeding?
No. A woman does not pray during menstruation or postnatal bleeding and does not make those prayers up. A'isha said: "We were commanded to make up fasting, but we were not commanded to make up prayer" (Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari; the four schools follow this). Use the excused days field to remove those days from the count.
What if I do not know exactly how long I missed?
Make your best estimate and lean toward the higher number. Hanafi scholars say to make up the number you judge most likely owed (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar). Try a few different dates in the calculator to see the range, and ask a scholar of your madhhab if you are unsure.
Can I make up more than one qaza prayer a day?
Yes. The "make-up prayers per day" field only sets your pace and the finish date. Many people pray one qaza after each fard prayer, then add more when they can. Choose a number you can keep up every day.
Is this a ruling, and does it save my details?
It is a planning aid, not a ruling, and it does not replace asking a scholar. Your dates are kept only in the page address, so you can bookmark or share the result. Nothing is stored on our servers.
