About Surah Az-Zukhruf
Faced with a Makkan aristocracy who argued that true prophethood required immense riches or angelic envoys rather than an ordinary man, the sixty-third revelation dismantles their materialism. It takes its primary name from zukhruf in verse 35, referring to the gold adornments granted in this life to believers and deniers alike.
The eighty-nine verses begin by affirming the divine origin of the Quran against mockery. The text soon exposes the contradictions of polytheism, noting that those who admit Allah is the Creator still attribute angels to Him as daughters, despite viewing daughters as inferior. The narrative then traces the continuous legacy of monotheism established by Abraham, before recounting the struggles of Moses and Jesus to confirm the consistency of the message.
A warning hangs over those who deny this reality, recalling the fate of past nations. The final scene of the Judgment stands waiting, framing the Prophet in his universal mission as a warner against the ultimate backdrop of Allah’s grace and mercy.

The Ornaments of Gold Meccan
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
ٱلۡمُبِينِ
٢
By the Scripture that makes things clear,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِنَّا
جَعَلۡنَٰهُ
قُرۡءَٰنًا
عَرَبِيّٗا
لَّعَلَّكُمۡ
تَعۡقِلُونَ
٣
We have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you [people] may understand.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّهُۥ
فِيٓ
أُمِّ
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
لَدَيۡنَا
لَعَلِيٌّ
حَكِيمٌ
٤
It is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.

أَفَنَضۡرِبُ
عَنكُمُ
ٱلذِّكۡرَ
صَفۡحًا
أَن
كُنتُمۡ
قَوۡمٗا
مُّسۡرِفِينَ
٥
Should We ignore you and turn this revelation away from you because you are insolent people?

وَكَمۡ
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
مِن
نَّبِيّٖ
فِي
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
٦
We have sent many a prophet to earlier people
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَمَا
يَأۡتِيهِم
مِّن
نَّبِيٍّ
إِلَّا
كَانُواْ
بِهِۦ
يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ
٧
and they mocked every one of them,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ
أَشَدَّ
مِنۡهُم
بَطۡشٗا
وَمَضَىٰ
مَثَلُ
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
٨
so We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history.

وَلَئِن
سَأَلۡتَهُم
مَّنۡ
خَلَقَ
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
لَيَقُولُنَّ
خَلَقَهُنَّ
ٱلۡعَزِيزُ
ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
٩
If you [Prophet] ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and earth?’ they are sure to say, ‘They were created by the Almighty, the All Knowing.’

ٱلَّذِي
جَعَلَ
لَكُمُ
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
مَهۡدٗا
وَجَعَلَ
لَكُمۡ
فِيهَا
سُبُلٗا
لَّعَلَّكُمۡ
تَهۡتَدُونَ
١٠
It is He who smoothed out the earth for you and traced out routes on it for you to find your way,

وَٱلَّذِي
نَزَّلَ
مِنَ
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
مَآءَۢ
بِقَدَرٖ
فَأَنشَرۡنَا
بِهِۦ
بَلۡدَةٗ
مَّيۡتٗاۚ
كَذَٰلِكَ
تُخۡرَجُونَ
١١
who sends water down from the sky in due measure––We resurrect dead land with it, and likewise you will be resurrected from the grave––

وَٱلَّذِي
خَلَقَ
ٱلۡأَزۡوَٰجَ
كُلَّهَا
وَجَعَلَ
لَكُم
مِّنَ
ٱلۡفُلۡكِ
وَٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمِ
مَا
تَرۡكَبُونَ
١٢
who created every kind of thing, who gave you ships and animals to ride on

لِتَسۡتَوُۥاْ
عَلَىٰ
ظُهُورِهِۦ
ثُمَّ
تَذۡكُرُواْ
نِعۡمَةَ
رَبِّكُمۡ
إِذَا
ٱسۡتَوَيۡتُمۡ
عَلَيۡهِ
وَتَقُولُواْ
سُبۡحَٰنَ
ٱلَّذِي
سَخَّرَ
لَنَا
هَٰذَا
وَمَا
كُنَّا
لَهُۥ
مُقۡرِنِينَ
١٣
so that you may remember your Lord’s grace when you are seated on them and say, ‘Glory be to Him who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves.

وَإِنَّآ
إِلَىٰ
رَبِّنَا
لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
١٤
Truly it is to our Lord that we are returning.’
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَجَعَلُواْ
لَهُۥ
مِنۡ
عِبَادِهِۦ
جُزۡءًاۚ
إِنَّ
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ
لَكَفُورٞ
مُّبِينٌ
١٥
Yet they assign some of His own servants to Him as offspring!Man is clearly ungrateful!

أَمِ
ٱتَّخَذَ
مِمَّا
يَخۡلُقُ
بَنَاتٖ
وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم
بِٱلۡبَنِينَ
١٦
Has He taken daughters for Himself and favoured you with sons?
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَإِذَا
بُشِّرَ
أَحَدُهُم
بِمَا
ضَرَبَ
لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
مَثَلٗا
ظَلَّ
وَجۡهُهُۥ
مُسۡوَدّٗا
وَهُوَ
كَظِيمٌ
١٧
When one of them is given news of the birth of a daughter, such as he so readily ascribes to the Lord of Mercy, his face grows dark and he is filled with gloom-

أَوَمَن
يُنَشَّؤُاْ
فِي
ٱلۡحِلۡيَةِ
وَهُوَ
فِي
ٱلۡخِصَامِ
غَيۡرُ
مُبِينٖ
١٨
‘Someone who is brought up amongst trinkets, who cannot put together a clear argument?’

وَجَعَلُواْ
ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ
ٱلَّذِينَ
هُمۡ
عِبَٰدُ
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
إِنَٰثًاۚ
أَشَهِدُواْ
خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ
سَتُكۡتَبُ
شَهَٰدَتُهُمۡ
وَيُسۡـَٔلُونَ
١٩
They consider the angels- God’s servants- to be female. Did they witness their creation? Their claim will be put on record and they will be questioned about it.

وَقَالُواْ
لَوۡ
شَآءَ
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ
مَا
عَبَدۡنَٰهُمۗ
مَّا
لَهُم
بِذَٰلِكَ
مِنۡ
عِلۡمٍۖ
إِنۡ
هُمۡ
إِلَّا
يَخۡرُصُونَ
٢٠
They say, ‘If the Lord of Mercy had willed it, we would not have worshipped them,’ but they do not know that- they are only guessing-
