About Surah Al-Insan

Known by multiple names drawn from its opening verses—including "Al-Dahr" (The Time) and "Hal ata"—this thirty-one-verse chapter addresses human origins. It is also titled "Al-Amshaj" (The Mixed Drop) for its second ayah, and "Al-Abrar" (The Righteous). While placed ninety-eighth in revelation order, its focus on monotheism marks an overwhelmingly Makkan style, chronologically preceding Surat Al-Mursalat. The Prophet customarily paired it with Surat Al-Sajdah during Friday Fajr prayers.

The text opens by affirming humanity was brought from nothing into existence, proving the certainty of the Resurrection. It immediately splits the human response into two paths: the grateful and the ungrateful. After briefly warning those who deny the Hereafter, the narrative dedicates its core to detailing the eternal bliss and spiritual stature reserved for those who thank their Creator.

The closing ayahs shift away from the Hereafter to console the Prophet in the face of rejection. The final verses ground the believer against disbelief, commanding steadfast patience and the continuous remembrance of Allah through prayer at specific times of the day and night.

٢٣
We Ourself have sent down this Quran to you [Prophet] in gradual revelation.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَٱصۡبِرۡ
لِحُكۡمِ
رَبِّكَ
وَلَا

مِنۡهُمۡ
ءَاثِمًا
أَوۡ
كَفُورٗا
٢٤
Await your Lord’s Judgement with patience; do not yield to any of these sinners or disbelievers;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱذۡكُرِ
ٱسۡمَ
رَبِّكَ
بُكۡرَةٗ
وَأَصِيلٗا
٢٥
remember the name of your Lord at dawn and in the evening;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمِنَ
ٱلَّيۡلِ
فَٱسۡجُدۡ
لَهُۥ
وَسَبِّحۡهُ
لَيۡلٗا
طَوِيلًا
٢٦
bow down before Him, and glorify Him at length by night.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّ
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
يُحِبُّونَ
ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ
وَيَذَرُونَ
وَرَآءَهُمۡ
يَوۡمٗا
ثَقِيلٗا
٢٧
These people love the fleeting life. They put aside [all thoughts of] a Heavy Day.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

نَّحۡنُ
خَلَقۡنَٰهُمۡ
وَشَدَدۡنَآ
أَسۡرَهُمۡۖ
وَإِذَا
شِئۡنَا
بَدَّلۡنَآ
أَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡ
تَبۡدِيلًا
٢٨
Yet We created them; We strengthened their constitution; if We please, We can replace such people completely.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّ
هَٰذِهِۦ
تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ
فَمَن
شَآءَ
ٱتَّخَذَ
إِلَىٰ
رَبِّهِۦ
سَبِيلٗا
٢٩
This is a reminder. Let whoever wishes, take the way to his Lord.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَا
تَشَآءُونَ
إِلَّآ
أَن
يَشَآءَ
ٱللَّهُۚ
إِنَّ
ٱللَّهَ
كَانَ
عَلِيمًا
حَكِيمٗا
٣٠
But you will only wish to do so if God wills- God is all knowing, all wise-

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يُدۡخِلُ
مَن
يَشَآءُ
فِي
رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ
وَٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
أَعَدَّ
لَهُمۡ
عَذَابًا
أَلِيمَۢا
٣١
He admits whoever He will into His Mercy and has prepared a painful torment for the disbelievers.
