Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad

About Surah Maryam
Predating the later Madinan texts about her family, this Makkan chapter is the first to focus extensively on Maryam and her son. Revealed around the fourth year of Prophethood, just before Sūrat Ṭā-Hā, its established name is Sūrat Maryam, though early authorities like ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās also called it Kāf-Hā-Yā-ʿAyn-Ṣād after its opening letters.
The text opens as an account of divine mercy, beginning with Zakariyyā receiving Yaḥyā in old age. It turns to defend Maryam’s honor against slander, detailing ʿĪsā speaking in the cradle to firmly refute claims of his divinity. The movement continues through a lineage of prophetic exemplars—including Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and Idrīs—contrasting their devotion with later generations who neglected prayer. It closes with an intense scene of the Hereafter and a climactic condemnation of attributing a son to God.
As you read its verses, notice the persistent repetition of al-Raḥmān (The Most Merciful). This specific divine name, which the Makkan polytheists vehemently rejected, permeates the chapter, anchoring its warnings of the Resurrection firmly in the reality of God's mercy.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
ذِكۡرُ
رَحۡمَتِ
رَبِّكَ
عَبۡدَهُۥ
زَكَرِيَّآ
٢
This is an account of your Lord’s grace towards His servant, Zachariah,

إِذۡ
نَادَىٰ
رَبَّهُۥ
نِدَآءً
خَفِيّٗا
٣
when he called to his Lord secretly, saying,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
قَالَ
رَبِّ
إِنِّي
وَهَنَ
ٱلۡعَظۡمُ
مِنِّي
وَٱشۡتَعَلَ
ٱلرَّأۡسُ
شَيۡبٗا
وَلَمۡ
أَكُنۢ
بِدُعَآئِكَ
رَبِّ
شَقِيّٗا
٤
‘Lord, my bones have weakened and my hair is ashen grey, but never, Lord, have I ever prayed to You in vain:

وَإِنِّي
خِفۡتُ
ٱلۡمَوَٰلِيَ
مِن
وَرَآءِي
وَكَانَتِ
ٱمۡرَأَتِي
عَاقِرٗا
فَهَبۡ
لِي
مِن
لَّدُنكَ
وَلِيّٗا
٥
I fear [what] my kinsmen [will do] when I am gone, for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor––a gift from You––

يَرِثُنِي
وَيَرِثُ
مِنۡ
ءَالِ
يَعۡقُوبَۖ
وَٱجۡعَلۡهُ
رَبِّ
رَضِيّٗا
٦
to be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him well pleasing [to You].’

يَٰزَكَرِيَّآ
إِنَّا
نُبَشِّرُكَ
بِغُلَٰمٍ
ٱسۡمُهُۥ
يَحۡيَىٰ
لَمۡ
نَجۡعَل
لَّهُۥ
مِن
قَبۡلُ
سَمِيّٗا
٧
‘Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name will be John––We have chosen this name for no one before him.’

قَالَ
رَبِّ
أَنَّىٰ
يَكُونُ
لِي
غُلَٰمٞ
وَكَانَتِ
ٱمۡرَأَتِي
عَاقِرٗا
وَقَدۡ
بَلَغۡتُ
مِنَ
ٱلۡكِبَرِ
عِتِيّٗا
٨
He said, ‘Lord, how can I have a son when my wife is barren, and I am old and frail?’
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
قَالَ
كَذَٰلِكَ
قَالَ
رَبُّكَ
هُوَ
عَلَيَّ
هَيِّنٞ
وَقَدۡ
خَلَقۡتُكَ
مِن
قَبۡلُ
وَلَمۡ
تَكُ
شَيۡـٔٗا
٩
He said, ‘This is what your Lord has said: “It is easy for Me: I created you, though you were nothing before.” ’

قَالَ
رَبِّ
ٱجۡعَل
لِّيٓ
ءَايَةٗۖ
قَالَ
ءَايَتُكَ
أَلَّا
تُكَلِّمَ
ٱلنَّاسَ
ثَلَٰثَ
لَيَالٖ
سَوِيّٗا
١٠
He said, ‘Give me a sign, Lord.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to anyone for three full [days and] nights.’

فَخَرَجَ
عَلَىٰ
قَوۡمِهِۦ
مِنَ
ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ
فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ
إِلَيۡهِمۡ
أَن
سَبِّحُواْ
بُكۡرَةٗ
وَعَشِيّٗا
١١
He went out of the sanctuary to his people and signalled to them to praise God morning and evening.

يَٰيَحۡيَىٰ
خُذِ
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
بِقُوَّةٖۖ
وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُ
ٱلۡحُكۡمَ
صَبِيّٗا
١٢
[We said], ‘John, hold on to the Scripture firmly.’ While he was still a boy, We granted him wisdom,

وَحَنَانٗا
مِّن
لَّدُنَّا
وَزَكَوٰةٗۖ
وَكَانَ
تَقِيّٗا
١٣
tenderness from Us, and purity. He was devout,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَبَرَّۢا
بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ
وَلَمۡ
يَكُن
جَبَّارًا
عَصِيّٗا
١٤
kind to his parents, not domineering or rebellious.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَسَلَٰمٌ
عَلَيۡهِ
يَوۡمَ
وُلِدَ
وَيَوۡمَ
يَمُوتُ
وَيَوۡمَ
يُبۡعَثُ
حَيّٗا
١٥
Peace was on him the day he was born, the day he died, and it will be on him the day he is raised to life again.

وَٱذۡكُرۡ
فِي
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ
مَرۡيَمَ
إِذِ
ٱنتَبَذَتۡ
مِنۡ
أَهۡلِهَا
مَكَانٗا
شَرۡقِيّٗا
١٦
Mention in the Quran the story of Mary. She withdrew from her family to a place to the east

فَٱتَّخَذَتۡ
مِن
دُونِهِمۡ
حِجَابٗا
فَأَرۡسَلۡنَآ
إِلَيۡهَا
رُوحَنَا
فَتَمَثَّلَ
لَهَا
بَشَرٗا
سَوِيّٗا
١٧
and secluded herself away; We sent Our Spirit to appear before her in the form of a perfected man.

قَالَتۡ
إِنِّيٓ
أَعُوذُ
بِٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
مِنكَ
إِن
كُنتَ
تَقِيّٗا
١٨
She said, ‘I seek the Lord of Mercy’s protection against you: if you have any fear of Him [do not approach]!’
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
قَالَ
إِنَّمَآ
أَنَا۠
رَسُولُ
رَبِّكِ
لِأَهَبَ
لَكِ
غُلَٰمٗا
زَكِيّٗا
١٩
but he said, ‘I am but a Mes-senger from your Lord, [come] to announce to you the gift of a pure son.’

قَالَتۡ
أَنَّىٰ
يَكُونُ
لِي
غُلَٰمٞ
وَلَمۡ
يَمۡسَسۡنِي
بَشَرٞ
وَلَمۡ
أَكُ
بَغِيّٗا
٢٠
She said, ‘How can I have a son when no man has touched me? I have not been unchaste,’
