About Surah Quraysh

Ubayy ibn Kaʿb and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb reportedly viewed this brief Makkan text and Sūrat al-Fīl as a single continuous unit. Though scholarly consensus ultimately separated them in the written Quran, their deep thematic link ties the protection of the Kaʿbah to the survival of the Quraysh tribe. Placed twenty-ninth in the chronological order of revelation, just after al-Tīn, the four verses of Sūrat Li-īlāfi Quraysh address a people who benefited uniquely from the sanctuary's safety while ignoring its Lord.

The text opens by invoking the tribe's winter and summer trade routes, highlighting the blessing of safe travel they enjoyed. From this recognition of immense favor, the focus shifts to a direct command, calling the Quraysh to practice pure monotheism by worshipping the Lord of that specific House in sheer gratitude.

Every illusion of tribal self-sufficiency falls away before the reality of their daily survival. The obligation to worship is anchored entirely to the singular divine source that feeds them against hunger and secures them against fear.
