About Surah Al-Waqi'ah

The severity of this text contributed to the Prophet’s graying hair. Counted as the forty-sixth revelation, arriving between Sūrat Ṭā-Hā and al-Shuʿarā’, "The Inevitable Event" takes its name from its opening declaration. It was delivered to a Makkan society that vehemently denied the Resurrection, laying out ninety-six verses that dismantle their disbelief.

The text begins with sudden cosmic upheaval, where the earth shakes and mountains are leveled to dust. From that fractured world, it immediately sorts all of humanity into three distinct groups, outlining the precise reward or punishment awaiting each. To prove the certainty of a second creation, the verses point toward undeniable signs of divine power in everyday nature—the mechanics of birth, and the sheer inability of humans to hold back a soul when it is pulled from a dying body.

These proofs firmly defend the Quran as a divine revelation against polytheist denial. The certainty of the impending Hour demands nothing less than the glorification and praise of Allah’s great name.

When that which is coming arrives,

then you will be sorted into three classes.

Those on the Right––what people they are!

Those on the Left––what people they are!

that causes no headache or intoxication;

[there will be] any fruit they choose;
