About Surah Al-Anbya

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud cherished this text among al-ʿItāq al-Ūwal—the early, exceptional chapters he learned first. Delivered in Makkah before the emigration, it takes the title of The Prophets by naming sixteen messengers. Only one other chapter names more, drawing direct lines between their ancient trials and the Prophet’s reality amid secret plots.

The verses open with a stark warning to a heedless humanity that the reckoning is imminent. The focus then expands to the heavens and earth, arguing the cosmic order could never survive a multiplicity of gods. From these signs, the text moves into a swift succession of prophetic histories—recounting the prayers and rescues of Ibrahim, Yunus, and Musa—proving every messenger brought the same truth and faced identical rejection.

The approaching Hour shadows these accounts, warning that all creatures face extinction and life remains a trial. Yet beyond the threat of sudden punishment and the release of Gog and Magog, a guarantee overrides the warnings. The earth is promised to the righteous believers, and the Prophet's mission is affirmed as a mercy to the worlds.

لِلنَّاسِ
حِسَابُهُمۡ
وَهُمۡ
فِي
غَفۡلَةٖ
مُّعۡرِضُونَ

Ever closer to people draws their reckoning, while they turn away, heedless.

ٱسۡتَمَعُوهُ
وَهُمۡ
يَلۡعَبُونَ
٢
Whenever any fresh revelation comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it playfully

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

لَاهِيَةٗ
قُلُوبُهُمۡۗ
وَأَسَرُّواْ
ٱلنَّجۡوَى
ٱلَّذِينَ
ظَلَمُواْ
هَلۡ

with frivolous hearts. The evildoers conferred in secret: ‘Is this man anything but a mortal like yourselves? Are you going to fall under his spell with your eyes wide open?’

Some say, ‘Muddled dreams’; others, ‘He made it up’; yet others, ‘He is just a poet, let him show us a sign as previous messengers did.’

But of the communities We destroyed before them not a single one believed. Will these now believe?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَآ

And even before your time [Prophet], all the messengers We sent were only men We inspired–– if you [disbelievers] do not know, ask people who know the Scripture––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَا
جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ
جَسَدٗا
لَّا
يَأۡكُلُونَ
ٱلطَّعَامَ

كَانُواْ
خَٰلِدِينَ
٨
We did not give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they immortal.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ثُمَّ
صَدَقۡنَٰهُمُ
ٱلۡوَعۡدَ
فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُمۡ
وَمَن

وَأَهۡلَكۡنَا
ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ
٩
We fulfilled Our promise to them in the end: We saved them and those We wished to save, and We destroyed those who exceeded all bounds.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

لَقَدۡ
أَنزَلۡنَآ
إِلَيۡكُمۡ
كِتَٰبٗا
فِيهِ
ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ
أَفَلَا
تَعۡقِلُونَ
١٠
And now We have sent down to you [people] a Scripture to remind you. Will you not use your reason?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَكَمۡ
قَصَمۡنَا
مِن
قَرۡيَةٖ
كَانَتۡ
ظَالِمَةٗ
وَأَنشَأۡنَا
بَعۡدَهَا
قَوۡمًا
ءَاخَرِينَ
١١
How many communities of evildoers We have destroyed! How many others We have raised up in their places!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَلَمَّآ
أَحَسُّواْ
بَأۡسَنَآ
إِذَا
هُم
مِّنۡهَا
يَرۡكُضُونَ
١٢
When they felt Our might coming upon them, see how they tried to escape it!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

لَا
تَرۡكُضُواْ
وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْ
إِلَىٰ
مَآ
أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡ
فِيهِ
وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡ
لَعَلَّكُمۡ
تُسۡـَٔلُونَ
١٣
‘Do not try to escape. Go back to your homes and the pleasure you revelled in: you may be questioned.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالُواْ
يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ
إِنَّا
كُنَّا
ظَٰلِمِينَ
١٤
They said, ‘Woe to us! We were wrong!’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَمَا
زَالَت
تِّلۡكَ
دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ
حَتَّىٰ
جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ
حَصِيدًا
خَٰمِدِينَ
١٥
and that cry of theirs did not cease until We made them burnt-offstubble.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَا
خَلَقۡنَا
ٱلسَّمَآءَ
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
وَمَا
بَيۡنَهُمَا
لَٰعِبِينَ
١٦
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them playfully.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

لَوۡ
أَرَدۡنَآ
أَن
نَّتَّخِذَ
لَهۡوٗا
لَّٱتَّخَذۡنَٰهُ
مِن
لَّدُنَّآ
إِن
كُنَّا
فَٰعِلِينَ
١٧
If We had wished for a pastime, We could have found it within Us- if We had wished for any such thing.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

بَلۡ
نَقۡذِفُ
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
عَلَى
ٱلۡبَٰطِلِ
فَيَدۡمَغُهُۥ
فَإِذَا
هُوَ
زَاهِقٞۚ
وَلَكُمُ
ٱلۡوَيۡلُ
مِمَّا
تَصِفُونَ
١٨
No! We hurl the truth against falsehood, and truth obliterates it- see how falsehood vanishes away! Woe to you [people] for the way you describe God!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَلَهُۥ
مَن
فِي
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ
وَمَنۡ
عِندَهُۥ
لَا
يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ
عَنۡ
عِبَادَتِهِۦ
وَلَا
يَسۡتَحۡسِرُونَ
١٩
Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, and those that are with Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they grow weary;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يُسَبِّحُونَ
ٱلَّيۡلَ
وَٱلنَّهَارَ
لَا
يَفۡتُرُونَ
٢٠
they glorify Him tirelessly night and day.
