About Surah Az-Zalzalah

Equated by the Prophet (ﷺ) to half of the entire Quran, this text was revealed to counter early polytheists who mocked the idea that their scattered bodies could ever be gathered for judgment. Though some scholars place its eight or nine verses in Madinah—arriving between An-Nisa and Al-Hadid—the soundest view roots it in Makkah. It takes its primary names, Al-Zilzal and Az-Zalzalah, from the shaking described in its opening verse.

The narrative opens with the cosmic terror preceding the Hour. The ground violently expels the dead, before the text turns to a sudden reality: the earth itself speaks, testifying to everything that occurred upon its surface. The perspective then shifts to the resurrected masses emerging from their graves in scattered groups to face their judgment.

The concluding lines distill divine recompense to its most microscopic level. The argument lands on a standard of absolute, meticulous justice, establishing that no action escapes accountability, even one the size of an atom.

Surah Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake) — 8 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا
زُلۡزِلَتِ
ٱلۡأَرۡضُ
زِلۡزَالَهَا
١
When the earth is shaken violently in its [last] quaking,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَخۡرَجَتِ
ٱلۡأَرۡضُ
أَثۡقَالَهَا
٢
when the earth throws out its burdens,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَقَالَ
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ
مَا
لَهَا
٣
when man cries, ‘What is happening to it?’;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَوۡمَئِذٖ
تُحَدِّثُ
أَخۡبَارَهَا
٤
on that Day, it will tell all

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

بِأَنَّ
رَبَّكَ
أَوۡحَىٰ
لَهَا
٥
because your Lord will inspire it [to do so].

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَوۡمَئِذٖ
يَصۡدُرُ
ٱلنَّاسُ
أَشۡتَاتٗا
لِّيُرَوۡاْ
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ
٦
On that Day, people will come forward in separate groups to be shown their deeds:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَمَن
يَعۡمَلۡ
مِثۡقَالَ
ذَرَّةٍ
خَيۡرٗا
يَرَهُۥ
٧
whoever has done an atom’s-weight of good will see it,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَن
يَعۡمَلۡ
مِثۡقَالَ
ذَرَّةٖ
شَرّٗا
يَرَهُۥ
٨
but whoever has done an atom’s-weight of evil will see that.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
