About Surah Al-Falaq
Recognized alongside the chapter that follows it as al-Muʿawwidhatān—The Two Protectors—this five-verse revelation arrived twentieth in the prophetic sequence, just after Sūrat al-Fīl. The Prophet declared that no words are more effective for seeking safety. Though a report regarding the sorcery of Labīd ibn al-Aʿṣam led some to argue for a Madinan origin, the stronger view maintains it was revealed in Makkah.
The text moves systematically from the vast to the intimate. It opens by directing the believer to seek refuge with the Lord of the Daybreak, then sweeps across the general evils present in all creation. From there, the verses turn toward specific, hidden threats: addressing harms lurking in the night's darkness, moving into the spiritual dangers of those practicing dark arts, and closing with the malice of an envious person.
As you read, observe how the sources of harm narrow. The prayer shifts from the broad dangers of the world down to the unseen threat of a jealous mind, anchoring the reader's defense entirely in the One who brings the dawn.
