About Surah Al-Kafirun

When a delegation of Makkan leaders, including Al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, proposed a compromise to the Prophet (ﷺ)—offering to worship each other’s deities in turn—these six verses arrived as the definitive reply. Counted as the 18th revelation, placed chronologically between al-Māʿūn and al-Fīl, the text leaves no room for negotiation. Beyond its famous opening, Qul Yā Ayyuhā al-Kāfirūn, it has been titled Sūrat al-ʿIbādah (The Worship) and Sūrat al-Dīn (The Religion). It even shares the title Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ (Purity of Faith) with chapter 112.

The verses construct an absolute barrier between monotheism and polytheistic practices. The address opens by flatly refusing the leaders' offer, then methodically establishes that Islamic doctrine will never mix with their idolatry. It closes by cementing a state of mutual separation with a final principle: "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
