About Surah 'Abasa

An interruption by a blind companion, ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm, gave this 24th revelation its primary name. While the Prophet (ﷺ) was occupied trying to convince a Quraysh leader of Islam, he briefly turned away from the sincere seeker—an act corrected by the opening verses of 'Abasa (He Frowned). Also called al-Aʿmā (The Blind Man) and al-Safarāh (The Scribes), this Makkan text establishes that spiritual sincerity alone measures human worth.

From this lesson in prophetic ethics, the verses move to affirm the high status of the Quran before turning to proofs of the Resurrection. To warn the arrogant wealthy elite, the text traces human creation from a mere drop of fluid, then points to the revival of dead earth through vegetation, calling people to recognize the grace in their daily sustenance.

The final reckoning arrives as a terrifying upheaval where a person will flee from their closest kin. Amid this deafening blast, humanity is abruptly sorted, leaving nothing but the absolute fate of the righteous and the wicked.
