About Surah Al-Ma'un

Taking its famous title from its final word, Al-Māʿūn (The Small Kindnesses) is also known as Al-Yatīm (The Orphan) and Al-Takdhīb (The Denial). Placed 17th in the order of revelation between Al-Takathur and Al-Kafirun, scholars debate its exact setting. Some consider it entirely Makkan, addressing wealthy elites like Al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah, while others suggest the second half was revealed in Madinah to confront those who feigned faith.

The text opens by exposing the spiritual reality of those who deny the Judgment, defining this denial through concrete action: abusing the orphan and failing to encourage feeding the poor. It then turns to ritual worship, expressing the dire state of those who are careless or hypocritical in their prayers.

The final verses land on a strict pairing of ritual sincerity and social compassion. Condemning those who pray to show off while refusing to lend even basic items, the revelation firmly ties true religion to the treatment of the vulnerable.
