About Surah Al-Fil

Sometimes known by its opening phrase, A-lam Tara (Did You Not See), this early Makkan chapter centers on a miracle from the year of the Prophet’s birth. The five verses recount how Abrahah’s army marched with elephants to destroy the Kaʿbah. Counted as the nineteenth revelation, its bond with the subsequent Sūrat Quraysh was so tight that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb reportedly viewed them as a single unit.

The text opens by questioning the fate of those who attacked the sacred House, proving its protector was the true Lord, not the surrounding idols. It then turns to the collapse of their schemes, offering implicit consolation to the Prophet that his Makkan opponents will similarly fail. Finally, the narrative closes by detailing the sudden destruction of the invaders.

These final verses deploy recent history as vivid proof against polytheism, warning the Quraysh that their numbers offer no real security. The chapter lands on a stark guarantee: the God who sent birds to scatter the army of the elephant will certainly protect His Messenger today.
