About Surah At-Takathur

Revealed as the sixteenth chapter, between Al-Kawthar and Al-Ma'un, this short text directly confronted a grim tribal practice. Among the Quraysh, rivalry over wealth and numbers drove clans to count even their deceased ancestors in the graveyard to prove their superiority. This Meccan revelation takes its primary name, At-Takathur (The Rivalry in world increase), from this very obsession, though it has also been called Alhakum (Preoccupied You) and Al-Maqbarah (The Graveyard).

Over its eight verses, the text moves swiftly from rebuke to ultimate reality. It opens by condemning this blinding preoccupation with lineage and material competition, warning that such distraction continues right up until one is placed in the earth. The focus then shifts entirely, confronting the reader with the absolute certainty of Judgment and the Hellfire.

It closes on a stark note of strict accountability. As you read the final verse, notice the turn from the tribes' boasting over earthly wealth to the reality that humanity will be questioned about every single blessing and worldly pleasure they enjoyed.
