About Surah Al-Muzzammil

An intimate description of the Prophet (ﷺ)—called "The Enveloped One" when commanded to rise for prayer—forms the established name of this text. Likely fourth in the order of revelation, the Makkan opening served as the initial code for prophetic training.

The address opens by mandating the night vigil, an intense spiritual preparation for the "Heavy Word" of revelation about to descend. The focus then turns to the immediate resistance in Makkah, ordering the Prophet (ﷺ) to trust Allah, disregard mockery, and leave his oppressors' punishment to the Divine. To ground this warning, the verses recall the total destruction that befell Pharaoh when he denied his messenger.

Up to a decade of hardship, travel, and fighting separates those early commands from the twentieth verse revealed in Madinah. The strict obligation of praying through the night lifts to ease the believers' burden. What stands in its place is a merciful decree to establish regular prayer, give charity, and ask for Allah’s forgiveness in exchange for a great reward.

[Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful.
