About Surah Al-Humazah

A towering, crushing fire waits for those who believe their fortunes make them untouchable. Addressed to wealthy Quraysh chiefs like Al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, this Meccan revelation targets men who made it their mission to ridicule the early Muslims. They hoarded money, convinced it would buy them immortality. The nine verses take their names from this conflict: Sūrat al-Humazah (The Slanderer) for the crime, and Sūrat al-Ḥuṭamah (The Crusher) for the penalty.

The text opens by pronouncing a curse upon those who habitually backbite. It turns immediately to the root of their arrogance—compulsively counting wealth to stave off death—before delivering its central threat. The guilty will be thrown into the Crushing Fire, an agony that violently penetrates to the heart, the seat of their corrupt belief.

The final verses seal the fate of these elites with absolute finality. The argument lands not merely on the heat of the flames, but on the terrifying architecture of their punishment: a massive, towering structure enclosing the condemned eternally.
