About Surah Taha

Taking its title from its two opening letters, this Makkan text appeared shortly before the first emigration to Abyssinia, predating ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb's conversion in the fifth year of prophethood. Because its 135 verses heavily feature Moses—the prophet spoken to directly by God—it has also been called Sūrat Mūsā and Sūrat al-Kalīm. It was sent down to console Muḥammad (ﷺ), showing how his mission mirrored that of his celebrated predecessor.

The text opens by affirming the Quran's divine origin, then moves into a detailed recounting of Moses's life. It traces his miraculous upbringing in Pharaoh's house through his victory over Egypt's ruler, using this triumph as a promise that Muḥammad (ﷺ) will also overcome his opponents. The narrative then exposes the Israelites' worship of the Sāmirī’s golden calf before pivoting to stark proofs of the Resurrection.

Beyond the horrors of Judgment Day and the penalties for those led astray by Satan, the revelation addresses the mockery the Prophet (ﷺ) endured. Against his people's persistent denial, he receives a firm command to remain steadfast.

It was not to distress you [Prophet] that We sent down the Quran to you,

but as a reminder for those who hold God in awe,

a revelation from the One who created the earth and the high heaven,

the Lord of Mercy, established on the throne.

Everything in the heavens and on earth, everything between them, everything beneath the soil, belongs to Him.

Whatever you may say aloud, He knows what you keep secret and what is even more hidden.

Has the story of Moses come to you [Prophet]?

He saw a fire and said to his people, ‘Stay here––I can see a fire. Maybe I can bring you a flaming brand from it or find some guidance there.’

When he came to the fire, he was summoned, ‘Moses!

I am your Lord. Take off your shoes: you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.

I have chosen you, so listen to what is being revealed.

I am God; there is no god but Me. So worship Me and keep up the prayer so that you remember Me.

The Hour is coming––though I choose to keep it hidden––for each soul to be rewarded for its labour.

Do not let anyone who does not believe in it and follows his own desires distract you from it, and so bring you to ruin.’

‘Moses, what is that in your right hand?’

‘It is my staff,’ he said, ‘I lean on it; restrain my sheep with it; I also have other uses for it.’
