About Surah Al-Masad

When the Prophet (ﷺ) ascended Mount Ṣafā to warn the Quraysh, his uncle, Abū Lahab, answered with a public curse: "Tabban lak" (Woe to you!). This five-verse response followed immediately. Revealed sixth—between al-Fātiḥah and al-Takwīr—it stands as the only chapter in the Quran to condemn a specific, living opponent by name.

The text opens by turning Abū Lahab's curse back upon him, decreeing his absolute ruin and dismissing his confidence that wealth or children could save him. It then moves from his earthly failure to his inevitable entry into a flaming Fire. Finally, the focus shifts to his wife, Umm Jamīl, condemning her for actively aiding his hateful deeds.

The chapter closes on a vivid, physical image of retribution. The final ayah fixes a rope of woven palm fiber (masad) around her neck, a direct reflection of the firewood she gathered and the thorns she once carried to harm the Prophet (ﷺ). Through this brief, explicit prophecy, their destruction is set in stone.
