Distinguishing itself from other chapters opening with the letters Alif-Lām-Rā’, this text takes its name from the patriarch’s prayer for Makkah. Counted as the 70th revelation by Jābir ibn Zayd, it wields Abraham's pure monotheism to challenge the Quraysh polytheists claiming his descent. Authorities place its fifty-two verses in the Makkan era, though an address to ringleaders who led their people to ruin is sometimes read as an allusion to the polytheists at Badr.
The revelation opens by defining its own purpose—bringing mankind from darkness into light—and consoles the Prophet by showing how messengers like Moses faced identical rejection. It sweeps through the destroyed nations of Nūḥ and ʿĀd, then contrasts Islam and polytheism through the parable of a goodly word versus an evil one.
