About Surah Ar-Rahman

Known as ʿArūs al-Quran—the Bride of the Quran—this text stands alone by opening directly with one of Allah’s names. It arrived in response to polytheists actively denying the title al-Raḥmān. Most early authorities place it in Makkah, revealed early enough that Asmā’ bint Abī Bakr heard it before the command for public preaching was fully established.

The text opens by declaring the Lord of Mercy taught the Quran and fashioned humanity. It sweeps across the cosmos, citing the sun, moon, and stars to prove divine order. Addressing humankind and the Jinn simultaneously, it catalogs the blessings granted to both species before pivoting to the terrors of the Reckoning and the vivid joys of the two Gardens prepared for the pious.

As you read its 78 verses, notice the rhythmic challenge structuring the chapter. Thirty-one times, the refrain “Then which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?” interrupts the descriptions of the natural world and the afterlife, forcing both men and Jinn to face their Creator before a final glorification of His majesty.

He released the two bodies of [fresh and salt] water. They meet,
