About Surah Ad-Dukhan

A prolonged period of mockery in Makkah pushed the Prophet (ﷺ) to pray for a severe affliction upon his detractors, a plea Allah answered with the terrifying prophecy of smoke. This unique sign of cosmic and worldly judgment gives Sūrat al-Dukhān its name. Also called Sūrat Ḥā-Mīm al-Dukhān, it is one of the seven Ḥawāmīm chapters, which the Prophet encouraged reciting on the evening before Friday.

The text opens by honoring the blessed night the Quran first descended, then shifts to the physical warning of the impending smoke and famine. Moving into the past, the verses recount the destruction of Pharaoh's people as a stark precedent. After pointing to the flawless creation of the heavens and earth to prove Allah’s exclusive divinity, the narrative crosses into the Hereafter, contrasting the terrors confronting the deniers with the secure bliss prepared for the righteous.

The final verses offer consolation to the Prophet (ﷺ) himself. Instead of demanding further argument, the conclusion commands him to remain steadfast and await the final, inevitable victory.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

By the Scripture that makes things clear,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

truly We sent it down on a blessed night––We have always sent warnings––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

a night when every matter of wisdom was made distinct

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

at Our command––We have always sent messages to man––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

as a mercy [Prophet] from your Lord who sees and knows all,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between––if only you people were firm believers––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

there is no god but Him: He gives life and death––He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

yet in [their state of] doubt they take nothing seriously.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

[Prophet], watch out for the Day when the sky brings forth clouds of smoke for all to see.

It will envelop the people. They will cry, ‘This is a terrible torment!

Lord relieve us from this torment! We believe!’

How will this [sudden] faith benefit them? When a prophet came to warn them plainly,

they turned their backs on him, saying, ‘He is tutored! He is possessed!’

We shall hold the torment back for a while ––you are sure to return [to Us]––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

and on the Day We seize [them] mightily We shall exact retribution.

We tested the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them,

saying, ‘Hand the servants of God over to me! I am a faithful messenger who has been sent to you.

Do not consider yourselves to be above God! I come to you with clear authority.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

I seek refuge in my Lord and yours against your insults!
