About Surah An-Nazi'at

Known by several names drawn from its vocabulary—Al-Mudabbirat (The Disposers), As-Sahirah (The Wakefulness), and At-Tammah (The Overwhelming Calamity)—this Makkan revelation is most recognized as An-Nazi'at (The Extractors), named for its opening oath. Arriving 81st, between An-Naba’ and Al-Infitar, its 46 verses directly answered polytheists who mocked a physical resurrection after the body’s disintegration.

The text opens by swearing to the terrifying certainty of the Resurrection, then shifts to the historical parable of Pharaoh. His destruction, despite his claiming divinity, serves as a stark warning against arrogance. The perspective then widens to the cosmos, demonstrating that recreating humankind is trivial compared to the creation of the universe. From there, the chapter moves to the overwhelming Judgment and the divergent fates of the pious and the transgressors.

As you read the closing verses, notice how the text addresses the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding those mocking the Hour. It clarifies that his duty is solely to warn of its coming, not to specify its time, establishing that absolute governance over the universe belongs to Allah alone.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ
غَرۡقٗا
١
By the forceful chargers

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ
نَشۡطٗا
٢
raring to go,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ
سَبۡحٗا
٣
sweeping ahead at full stretch,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ
سَبۡقٗا
٤
overtaking swiftly

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ
أَمۡرٗا
٥
to bring the matter to an end,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَوۡمَ
تَرۡجُفُ
ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ
٦
on the Day when the blast reverberates

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

تَتۡبَعُهَا
ٱلرَّادِفَةُ
٧
and the second blast follows,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قُلُوبٞ
يَوۡمَئِذٖ
وَاجِفَةٌ
٨
hearts will tremble

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

أَبۡصَٰرُهَا
خَٰشِعَةٞ
٩
and eyes will be downcast.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَقُولُونَ
أَءِنَّا
لَمَرۡدُودُونَ
فِي
ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ
١٠
They say, ‘What? shall we be brought back to life,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

أَءِذَا
كُنَّا
عِظَٰمٗا
نَّخِرَةٗ
١١
after we have turned into decayed bones?’ and they say,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالُواْ
تِلۡكَ
إِذٗا
كَرَّةٌ
خَاسِرَةٞ
١٢
‘Such a return is impossible!’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَإِنَّمَا
هِيَ
زَجۡرَةٞ
وَٰحِدَةٞ
١٣
But all it will take is a single blast,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَإِذَا
هُم
بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ
١٤
and they will be back above ground.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

هَلۡ
أَتَىٰكَ
حَدِيثُ
مُوسَىٰٓ
١٥
Have you [Prophet] heard the story of Moses?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِذۡ
نَادَىٰهُ
رَبُّهُۥ
بِٱلۡوَادِ
ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ
طُوًى
١٦
His Lord called out to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ٱذۡهَبۡ
إِلَىٰ
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
إِنَّهُۥ
طَغَىٰ
١٧
‘Go to Pharaoh, for he has exceeded all bounds,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَقُلۡ
هَل
لَّكَ
إِلَىٰٓ
أَن
تَزَكَّىٰ
١٨
and ask him, “Do you want to purify yourself [of sin]?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَهۡدِيَكَ
إِلَىٰ
رَبِّكَ
فَتَخۡشَىٰ
١٩
Do you want me to guide you to your Lord, so that you may hold Him in awe?” ’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَرَىٰهُ
ٱلۡأٓيَةَ
ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
٢٠
Moses showed him the great sign,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَكَذَّبَ
وَعَصَىٰ
٢١
but he denied it and refused [the faith].

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ثُمَّ
أَدۡبَرَ
يَسۡعَىٰ
٢٢
He turned away and hastily

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَحَشَرَ
فَنَادَىٰ
٢٣
gathered his people, proclaiming,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَقَالَ
أَنَا۠
رَبُّكُمُ
ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
٢٤
‘I am your supreme lord,’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَخَذَهُ
ٱللَّهُ
نَكَالَ
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ
وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ
٢٥
so God condemned him to punishment in the life to come as well as in this life:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّ
فِي
ذَٰلِكَ
لَعِبۡرَةٗ
لِّمَن
يَخۡشَىٰٓ
٢٦
there truly is a lesson in this for anyone who stands in awe of God.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ءَأَنتُمۡ
أَشَدُّ
خَلۡقًا
أَمِ
ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ
بَنَىٰهَا
٢٧
Which is harder to create: you people or the sky that He built,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

رَفَعَ
سَمۡكَهَا
فَسَوَّىٰهَا
٢٨
raising it high and perfecting it,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَغۡطَشَ
لَيۡلَهَا
وَأَخۡرَجَ
ضُحَىٰهَا
٢٩
giving darkness to its night and bringing out its morning brightness,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ
بَعۡدَ
ذَٰلِكَ
دَحَىٰهَآ
٣٠
and the earth, too, He spread out,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

أَخۡرَجَ
مِنۡهَا
مَآءَهَا
وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا
٣١
bringing waters and pastures out of it,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلۡجِبَالَ
أَرۡسَىٰهَا
٣٢
and setting firm mountains [in it]

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

مَتَٰعٗا
لَّكُمۡ
وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
٣٣
for you and your animals to enjoy?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَإِذَا
جَآءَتِ
ٱلطَّآمَّةُ
ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
٣٤
When the great overwhelming event arrives

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَوۡمَ
يَتَذَكَّرُ
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ
مَا
سَعَىٰ
٣٥
on the Day that man remembers what he has done

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَبُرِّزَتِ
ٱلۡجَحِيمُ
لِمَن
يَرَىٰ
٣٦
and Hell is there for all to see,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَمَّا
مَن
طَغَىٰ
٣٧
for anyone who has transgressed

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَءَاثَرَ
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
٣٨
and preferred the present life

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَإِنَّ
ٱلۡجَحِيمَ
هِيَ
ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
٣٩
Hell will be home;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَمَّا
مَنۡ
خَافَ
مَقَامَ
رَبِّهِۦ
وَنَهَى
ٱلنَّفۡسَ
عَنِ
ٱلۡهَوَىٰ
٤٠
for anyone who feared the meeting with his Lord and restrained himself from base desires,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَإِنَّ
ٱلۡجَنَّةَ
هِيَ
ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
٤١
Paradise will be home.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ
عَنِ
ٱلسَّاعَةِ
أَيَّانَ
مُرۡسَىٰهَا
٤٢
They ask you [Prophet] about the Hour,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فِيمَ
أَنتَ
مِن
ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ
٤٣
saying, ‘When will it arrive?’, but how can you tell [them that]?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِلَىٰ
رَبِّكَ
مُنتَهَىٰهَآ
٤٤
Its time is known only to your Lord;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّمَآ
أَنتَ
مُنذِرُ
مَن
يَخۡشَىٰهَا
٤٥
you are only sent to warn those who fear it.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

كَأَنَّهُمۡ
يَوۡمَ
يَرَوۡنَهَا
لَمۡ
يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ
إِلَّا
عَشِيَّةً
أَوۡ
ضُحَىٰهَا
٤٦
On the Day they see it, it will seem they lingered [in this life] an evening [at most,] or its morning.
