إِذَا
يَغۡشَىٰ

By the enshrouding night,

About Surah Al-Layl
Human effort divides into two fiercely opposed directions: the giving of the pious and the withholding of the denier. Revealed during the early friction between generous believers and miserly polytheists in Makkah, the text takes its primary name, Al-Layl, from its opening cosmic oath swearing by the night when it covers.
The verses open by affirming that mankind’s striving is entirely fractured, leading to two distinct fates. The argument then establishes that Allah holds ultimate guidance, easing the way to Heaven for those who act in charity. It immediately pivots to warn the stingy who reject the Hereafter, stripping away the illusion that hoarded wealth can save anyone from the great Fire.
The final lines offer direct consolation to the Prophet (ﷺ), cementing his role as a reminder for those who choose to be guided. The chapter ultimately lands on the purest motive for giving: a final promise that true reward belongs to the believer who spends not to repay a worldly favor, but solely to seek the countenance of their Lord, the Most High.

Al-Layl
The Night Meccan
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلنَّهَارِ
إِذَا
تَجَلَّىٰ
٢
by the radiant day,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَمَا
خَلَقَ
ٱلذَّكَرَ
وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ
٣
by His creation of male and female!
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ
سَعۡيَكُمۡ
لَشَتَّىٰ
٤
The ways you take differ greatly.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَأَمَّا
مَنۡ
أَعۡطَىٰ
وَٱتَّقَىٰ
٥
There is the one who gives, who is mindful of God,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَصَدَّقَ
بِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ
٦
who testifies to goodness––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ
لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ
٧
We shall smooth his way towards ease.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَأَمَّا
مَنۢ
بَخِلَ
وَٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
٨
There is the one who is miserly, who is self-satisfied,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَكَذَّبَ
بِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ
٩
who denies goodness––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ
لِلۡعُسۡرَىٰ
١٠
We shall smooth his way towards hardship
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَمَا
يُغۡنِي
عَنۡهُ
مَالُهُۥٓ
إِذَا
تَرَدَّىٰٓ
١١
and his wealth will not help him as he falls.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ
عَلَيۡنَا
لَلۡهُدَىٰ
١٢
Our part is to provide guidance––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّ
لَنَا
لَلۡأٓخِرَةَ
وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ
١٣
this world and the next belong to Us––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَأَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ
نَارٗا
تَلَظَّىٰ
١٤
so I warn you about the raging Fire,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
لَا
يَصۡلَىٰهَآ
إِلَّا
ٱلۡأَشۡقَى
١٥
in which none but the most wicked one will burn,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
ٱلَّذِي
كَذَّبَ
وَتَوَلَّىٰ
١٦
who denied [the truth], and turned away.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا
ٱلۡأَتۡقَى
١٧
The most pious one will be spared this––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
ٱلَّذِي
يُؤۡتِي
مَالَهُۥ
يَتَزَكَّىٰ
١٨
who gives his wealth away as self-purification,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَمَا
لِأَحَدٍ
عِندَهُۥ
مِن
نِّعۡمَةٖ
تُجۡزَىٰٓ
١٩
not to return a favour to anyone
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِلَّا
ٱبۡتِغَآءَ
وَجۡهِ
رَبِّهِ
ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
٢٠
but for the sake of his Lord the Most High––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَلَسَوۡفَ
يَرۡضَىٰ
٢١
and he will be well pleased.
