About Surah At-Tariq

An oath sworn by the heavens and the nightcomer inaugurates this seventeen-verse Makkan address, anchoring the reality of the Resurrection to undeniable physical proofs. Revealed before the tenth year of prophethood as the thirty-sixth chapter to counter early denials of life after death, the text took its primary name from that opening invocation. The Prophet (ﷺ) customarily paired it with Sūrat al-Burūj during the Isha prayer.

From the vastness of the cosmos, the perspective narrows to the delicate origin of humanity. The verses trace human formation from an emitted fluid, demonstrating that a Creator capable of initiating such life can easily recreate a broken body. This biological proof transitions into absolute moral accountability, emphasizing that every human deed is meticulously counted and recorded.

After affirming the Quran as a decisive and serious word rather than an idle joke, the address turns directly to the conflict in Makkah. The plotting polytheists face a stark warning of impending punishment, while the Prophet (ﷺ) is assured of swift divine aid and victory over his deniers.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
وَٱلطَّارِقِ
١
By the sky and the night-comer––

وَمَآ
أَدۡرَىٰكَ
مَا
ٱلطَّارِقُ
٢
What will explain to you what the night-comer is?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ٱلنَّجۡمُ
ٱلثَّاقِبُ
٣
The piercing star––

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِن
كُلُّ
نَفۡسٖ
لَّمَّا
عَلَيۡهَا
حَافِظٞ
٤
there is a watcher over every soul.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَلۡيَنظُرِ
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ
مِمَّ
خُلِقَ
٥
Man should reflect on what he was created from.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

خُلِقَ
مِن
مَّآءٖ
دَافِقٖ
٦
He is created from spurting fluid,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَخۡرُجُ
مِنۢ
بَيۡنِ
ٱلصُّلۡبِ
وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ
٧
then he emerges from between the backbone and breastbone:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّهُۥ
عَلَىٰ
رَجۡعِهِۦ
لَقَادِرٞ
٨
God is certainly able to bring him back to life.

يَوۡمَ
تُبۡلَى
ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ
٩
On the Day when secrets are laid bare

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَمَا

he will have no power and no one to help him.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
ذَاتِ
ٱلرَّجۡعِ
١١
By the sky and its recurring rain,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
ذَاتِ
ٱلصَّدۡعِ
١٢
by the earth that cracks open!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّهُۥ
لَقَوۡلٞ
فَصۡلٞ
١٣
This is truly a decisive statement;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَمَا
هُوَ
بِٱلۡهَزۡلِ
١٤
it is not something to be taken lightly.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّهُمۡ
يَكِيدُونَ
كَيۡدٗا
١٥
They plot and scheme,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَكِيدُ
كَيۡدٗا
١٦
but so do I:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَمَهِّلِ
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
أَمۡهِلۡهُمۡ
رُوَيۡدَۢا
١٧
[Prophet], let the disbelievers be, let them be for a while.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
