About Surah Al-Buruj
The terror faced by early Makkan Muslims finds a historical mirror in this twenty-two-verse revelation. During a period of severe persecution by the Quraysh, the text invokes the chilling precedent of the People of the Ditch—who burned believers alive—warning Makkah's polytheists that they invite similar divine judgment. The Prophet customarily recited this text, titled Sūrat al-Samā’ dhāt al-burūj (The Heaven Possessing the Zodiacal Signs), during the Isha prayer alongside Sūrat al-Ṭāriq.
The verses move from the certainty of the Day of Judgment into the brutal history of the ditch, linking past suffering with the believers' present reality. Out of this persecution, the focus shifts to a promise of eternal bliss for the patient and a declaration of Allah's vast dominion to seize the wicked. This reassurance expands by recalling the destruction that overtook Pharaoh and Thamūd for denying their messengers.
Against the fragile tyranny of oppressors, the divine word is unalterable. The Quran stands as a glorious, truthful revelation, perfectly preserved upon a protected tablet.
