About Surah An-Naba
Early in the Prophethood, Makkah's polytheists responded to warnings of the Resurrection with mockery and open dispute. This early revelation—counted as the 33rd or 40th to arrive—meets their skepticism head-on. Drawn from its opening challenge, the text is sometimes called Sūrat ʿAmma Yatasā’alūn (About What They Question) or Sūrat al-Tasā’ul (The Questioning). It is most widely known as Sūrat al-Naba’ (The Tidings) from its second ayah, or Sūrat al-Muʿṣirāt (The Rain Clouds).
The verses move swiftly from recording this denial to establishing the sheer scale of divine power. By pointing to the earth, mountains, sleep, the sun, and rain, the text builds physical proof that resurrection is entirely possible. The focus then shifts to the final scene, detailing the terrors awaiting arrogant transgressors, placed in sharp relief against the eternal delights prepared for righteous believers.
Divine awareness encompasses all human deeds, tracking every action for judgment. A terrifying reality awaits on a day when every soul faces this record, bringing an absolute regret where the disbeliever wishes he were nothing but dust.
