About Surah Al-Ahzab
The gathering of allied Arab armies to besiege Madinah frames the intense trials and social reforms of these seventy-three verses. Placed ninetieth in the revelation order, this text takes its name from those confederates. Beyond the military ordeal, it dismantles the pre-Islamic practice of adoption, addressing Zaynab bint Jahsh’s marriage to Zayd ibn Harithah to formalize this shift.
The address opens by commanding the Prophet to rely on Allah rather than yielding to detractors, then repudiates false kinship ties. The verses soon recount the divine intervention of wind and angels during the Battle of the Trench, unmasking the defeatism of hypocrites while commending the steadfast. From the battlefield, the focus shifts inward to the Prophetic household, establishing the sanctity of his wives and outlining strict regulations on marriage, divorce, and the etiquette of entering his home.
After threatening rumor-spreaders who agitate the city with false reports, the verses demand truthful speech. Humanity is left bearing the immense Trust—a responsibility guaranteeing punishment for hypocrites and polytheists, and divine mercy for believers.
