About Surah Al-Baqarah
The Prophet (ﷺ) titled this text Sanām al-Qur’ān, the Summit of the Quran. Taking its name from the unique narrative of the cow the Israelites were commanded to sacrifice, these 286 verses were the first revealed in Madinah. Their descent spanned nearly a decade, bridging early laws like fasting with what is considered the very last ayah of revelation.
The text opens by categorizing humanity into believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites, then turns to the creation of Adam and the Israelites' broken covenant. The focus shifts to Abraham, establishing Islam's inheritance of his faith through the changing of the Qiblah. From this foundation, the verses construct an extensive legal framework for the emerging Muslim society, regulating family life, finance, justice, and warfare.
Interwoven through these statutes are parables and affirmations of faith, including the exaltation of God’s attributes in Āyat al-Kursī. Praised by the Prophet (ﷺ) alongside Āl ʿImrān as one of the Two Radiant Ones, the long progression of rules and warnings resolves directly into a concluding supplication.
