About Surah Al-Mursalat
The Prophet (ﷺ) once remarked that the severe warnings of this early Makkan revelation were among those that caused his hair to gray. Recited by him frequently in prayer, even shortly before his death, the fifty verses of Al-Mursalat (The Emissaries) arrived thirty-third in the order of revelation to answer those mocking the reality of the Resurrection. It is also known by its opening phrase, wa-al-Mursalāti ʿurfan.
The text opens with five powerful oaths affirming the certainty of Judgment, then moves directly into the terrifying dissolution of the cosmos. It turns toward tangible proofs, citing the miraculous creation of humans from a despised fluid, the stabilizing mountains, and the historical ruin of the first generations. The chapter closes by contrasting the sorrow of the deniers with the joy of the righteous in Paradise, ending on a final challenge to find another message if they reject the Quran.
As you read, pay attention to the relentless rhythm structuring these arguments. The terrifying refrain, "Woe that Day to the deniers!" repeats ten times throughout the text, anchoring the chapter's warnings.
