About Surah Nuh
Wadd, Suwaʿ, Yaghuth, Yaʿuq, and Nasr—these were the specific idols worshipped by the first major nation to deny its messenger. Known by its theme and its opening phrase, Surat Inna arsalna Nuhan, this Makkan revelation recounts Noah’s mission. Sent down between an-Nahl and at-Tur, it uses the threat of the great flood as a historical analogue for the resistance the Prophet (ﷺ) faced in his own city.
The text opens with a warning of inescapable torment before detailing Noah’s exhaustive call. He points to the marvels of creation—the sun, the moon, the earth, and the rain—promising abundant provision, progeny, and gardens in exchange for obedience. The narrative then pivots to the people's refusal, exposing their designs to mislead others and cling to their named gods.
The final verses bring this conflict to its breaking point. Spanning 28 to 30 ayahs depending on regional counting traditions, the chapter culminates in Noah’s definitive prayer: a plea for the catastrophic destruction of the disbelievers and a final request for the forgiveness of the believers.
