وَمَا
يَسۡطُرُونَ

About Surah Al-Qalam
Arriving during Makkah's first wave of severe persecution, this chapter is among the earliest messages given to the Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ). The scholar Jābir ibn Zayd even counted it as the second revelation. Known as Sūrat al-Qalam (The Pen) or Sūrat Nūn, it opens with a divine oath by the instrument of writing, establishing the sanctity of knowledge while refuting the influential leaders who mocked the messenger as a madman.
The text moves from affirming the Prophet’s (ﷺ) moral character into a precise condemnation of his deniers, exposing traits like slander and stinginess. To ground this warning, the narrative shifts to a parable of wealthy orchard owners. Because they conspired to withhold charity, they awoke to find their entire harvest destroyed.
The final passages turn directly to the Prophet (ﷺ), counseling quiet endurance. By recalling Yūnus (Jonah) and his moment of impatience, the chapter anchors its demand for steadfastness in history. The argument ultimately lands on a definitive assurance that Allah holds full awareness of every inner thought and outward deed.

The Pen Meccan
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
مَآ
أَنتَ
بِنِعۡمَةِ
رَبِّكَ
بِمَجۡنُونٖ
٢
Your Lord’s grace does not make you [Prophet] a madman:
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّ
لَكَ
لَأَجۡرًا
غَيۡرَ
مَمۡنُونٖ
٣
you will have a never-ending reward––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَإِنَّكَ
لَعَلَىٰ
خُلُقٍ
عَظِيمٖ
٤
truly you have a strong character––

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ
وَيُبۡصِرُونَ
٥
and soon you will see, as will they,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
بِأَييِّكُمُ
ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ
٦
which of you is afflicted with madness.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِنَّ
رَبَّكَ
هُوَ
أَعۡلَمُ
بِمَن
ضَلَّ
عَن
سَبِيلِهِۦ
وَهُوَ
أَعۡلَمُ
بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ
٧
Your Lord knows best who strays from His path and who is rightly guided.

فَلَا
تُطِعِ
ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ
٨
So do not yield to those who deny the truth––

وَدُّواْ
لَوۡ
تُدۡهِنُ
فَيُدۡهِنُونَ
٩
they want you to compromise with them and then they will compromise with you––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
وَلَا
تُطِعۡ
كُلَّ
حَلَّافٖ
مَّهِينٍ
١٠
do not yield to any contemptible swearer,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
هَمَّازٖ
مَّشَّآءِۭ
بِنَمِيمٖ
١١
to any backbiter, slander-monger,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
مَّنَّاعٖ
لِّلۡخَيۡرِ
مُعۡتَدٍ
أَثِيمٍ
١٢
or hinderer of good, to anyone who is sinful, aggressive,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
عُتُلِّۭ
بَعۡدَ
ذَٰلِكَ
زَنِيمٍ
١٣
coarse, and on top of all that, an imposter.

أَن
كَانَ
ذَا
مَالٖ
وَبَنِينَ
١٤
Just because he has wealth and sons,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِذَا
تُتۡلَىٰ
عَلَيۡهِ
ءَايَٰتُنَا
قَالَ
أَسَٰطِيرُ
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
١٥
when our revelations are recited to him, he says, ‘These are just ancient fables.’

سَنَسِمُهُۥ
عَلَى
ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ
١٦
We shall brand him on the snout!
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
إِنَّا
بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ
كَمَا
بَلَوۡنَآ
أَصۡحَٰبَ
ٱلۡجَنَّةِ
إِذۡ
أَقۡسَمُواْ
لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا
مُصۡبِحِينَ
١٧
We have tried them as We tried the owners of a certain garden, who swore that they would harvest its fruits in the morning

وَلَا
يَسۡتَثۡنُونَ
١٨
and made no allowance [for the Will of God]:

فَطَافَ
عَلَيۡهَا
طَآئِفٞ
مِّن
رَّبِّكَ
وَهُمۡ
نَآئِمُونَ
١٩
a disaster from your Lord struck the garden as they slept
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
٢٠
and by morning it was stripped bare, a desolate land.
