About Surah At-Tahrim
A household dispute over the Prophet (ﷺ) consuming honey led him to vow against a lawful comfort to appease ʿĀ’ishah and Ḥafṣah, prompting the legal and ethical corrections of Sūrat al-Taḥrīm. Counted as the 105th revelation between al-Ḥujurāt and al-Jumuʿah, these twelve verses are alternatively titled "Sūrat al-Nabī."
The text moves outward from this private moment. It first corrects the Prophet (ﷺ) for prohibiting what Allah permitted, laying down the law for expiating oaths. The address then pivots to his wives, exposing their hidden conversations and issuing a severe threat of divorce if their internal divisions persist. From the prophetic home, the scope broadens to all believers with a stark command: protect your families from Hellfire through sincere repentance.
The standard of personal accountability crystalizes into four dramatic parables. The disbelieving wives of Nūḥ and Lūṭ face ruin despite their marriage to prophets. In sharp contrast stand Pharaoh’s wife Āsiyah, who believed despite her husband's disbelief, and the perfect woman Maryam, their individual conviction entirely unbroken by the circumstances surrounding them.
