About Surah Al-Munafiqun
The Prophet frequently recited these eleven verses in the second unit of the Friday prayer, following Surat al-Jumu‘ah, deliberately publicizing a warning to those masking their treachery. Revealed around 5 AH after the Battle of Banu al-Mustaliq, the chapter arrived to address a specific sedition. ‘Abd Allah ibn Ubayy had threatened to expel the Prophet from Madinah. In response, this revelation exposed the treason while validating Zayd ibn Arqam, the young companion who truthfully reported the plot.
The text opens by dismantling the hypocrites' facade, noting how impressive physical appearances belie complete spiritual corruption and false declarations of faith. It moves directly into the details of their false oaths and arrogant claims separating the honorable from the lowly, condemning their attempts to undermine Muslim support.
In its closing verses, the focus shifts entirely away from internal enemies and toward the faithful. The argument lands on a stark reminder, urging believers to prioritize spending and remembrance before the sudden arrival of death makes it too late.
