About Surah Al-Mumtahanah
The attempt by Ḥāṭib ibn Abī Baltaʿah to send a letter warning the Makkans of the Prophet’s advance triggered the opening of this Madinan revelation. Emerging near the negotiation of the Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyyah in the sixth year post-Emigration, its thirteen verses establish the strict boundaries of loyalty and disavowal. The surah takes its translated name, "She that is to be examined" (Al-Mumtaḥanah), from the tenth ayah detailing the legal procedure for testing the sincerity of believing women refugees.
The text moves from confronting misplaced affection to defining an ethical framework for interacting with polytheists. It elevates Abraham as the standard for severing ties with idolaters, yet permits kindness toward those who have neither fought the Muslims nor driven them from their homes. From these broad principles, the legislation narrows to practical realities: managing the broken marriages of refugees, handling mutual dowry repayments, and setting conditions for immigrant women pledging allegiance.
Beyond these civil rulings stands a stark warning against forging alliances with the Jews, who are likened to the polytheists in their absolute denial of the resurrection.
