About Surah Luqman
When the Quraysh sought to test the Prophet (ﷺ), they asked him about a sage whose name already circulated among the Arabs: Luqman. Simultaneously, men like an-Nadr ibn al-Harith were reciting newly acquired foreign texts, such as Persian epics, to distract the public from hearing the Quran. Revealed in Makkah as the fifty-seventh chapter, these 34 verses directly counter this tactic, elevating divine guidance over worldly lore.
The text opens by challenging these false narratives and demanding the idolaters show what their gods have actually created. It then moves into the heart of the chapter: the detailed moral instructions Luqman gave his son, a record unique to this surah. From this private counsel, the verses widen to expose the flaws of blind imitation, before pointing to cosmic signs that prove the sheer ease of the Resurrection.
As the chapter closes, notice how it dismantles human pretensions to the unseen. It cuts off fortune-telling entirely, issuing a stark reminder that no relative can help another on the Day of Judgment, and that knowledge of the Hour rests with Allah alone.
