About Surah Al-Qasas
Completing the sequence of the Ṭawāsīn—three consecutive Makkan chapters opening with the letters Ṭā-Sīn—these eighty-eight verses center on the history of Mūsā. The name Al-Qasas originates in ayah 25, marking the moment Mūsā recounts his history to his new father-in-law after fleeing Egypt. Because the text narrates the exact events Mūsā himself recounted, the motif of storytelling shapes the entire structure.
The chapter opens with the fullest Quranic account of Mūsā’s youth, expanding on earlier summaries to detail his upbringing directly inside Pharaoh’s household. It then turns to Makkah’s polytheists, framing the Prophet’s unlettered knowledge of this past as proof of revelation, before shifting to the wealthy Qārūn to demonstrate how worldly pride brings destruction.
Notice how ayah 5 establishes a cosmic law binding these histories to the early Muslims' reality: Allah will humble the arrogant and elevate the oppressed. This culminates in ayah 85—said to have been revealed while the Prophet (ﷺ) was fleeing to Madinah—offering the profound consolation of an eventual return.
