About Surah An-Nur
The Companion ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb specifically instructed the community to learn this chapter. Revealed in Madinah over nearly a decade—spanning from early rulings around 1 or 2 AH to verses given after the Battle of Tabuk in 9 AH—its 64 verses were delivered piecemeal to build a foundation of social legislation. It takes its name from the profound "Ayah of Light" in verse 35, a unique description of Allah.
The text opens by establishing severe punishments for adultery and false accusation, moving directly into the definitive exoneration of ʿĀ’ishah after the incident of the Slander (al-ifk). From addressing this crisis, it shifts to preventative daily manners, detailing rules for guarding the gaze, seeking permission before entering rooms, and encouraging marriage. It crowns this social program with the parable of Allah’s Light, showing these practical laws form a society guided by divine illumination rather than desire or gossip.
As you read, observe how warnings against tongue-driven corruption sit directly alongside reminders of Allah’s greatness, contrasting the clear guidance of faith against the misguidance of disbelief.
