About Surah Al-Isra
Companions of the Prophet commonly called this text Sūrat Banī Isrā’īl, setting apart its historical warning about the Israelites’ two periods of corruption and ruin. Placed fiftieth in revelation order, it followed the al-Isrā’ event—occurring a year and five months before the migration—to confront polytheists who denied the nocturnal transit linking the Kaʿbah to an abandoned Al-Masjid Al-Aqṣā.
The text opens by validating this miracle before aligning the Quran with the Torah and Muḥammad’s mission with Mūsā’s. It then establishes foundational ethics for the nascent Muslim community, laying down core commandments that echo those given to Moses. From these moral laws, the verses dismantle polytheistic theology, recount Satan’s refusal to bow to Adam, and answer demands for specific miracles by asserting the inimitable nature of the Quran itself.
Despite the immediate hostility facing the early believers, a definitive divine guarantee overrides the polytheists' attacks. The Prophet is promised a victorious return to his homeland of Makkah, cementing the certainty that Islam will ultimately triumph.
