About Surah Al-Fatihah
Placed at the head of the Quran by prophetic command, this Makkan revelation is known as Umm al-Qur’an, the Source of the Quran. Arriving after al-ʿAlaq and al-Muddaththir, it stands as the first chapter revealed in full. It acts as a preface, gathering the root purposes of the Book into seven ayahs. Because it is recited in every unit of prayer, scholars also call it Al-Sabʿ al-Mathānī—the seven oft-repeated verses.
The chapter moves from theology to devotion, then to petition. It opens by establishing Allah's attributes of perfection, His mercy, and His absolute sovereignty over the Day of Judgment. The center pivots to the worshiper’s relationship with the Divine, captured in a dual affirmation of exclusive devotion and trust: "You alone we worship" and "You alone we ask for help."
The final verse grounds this spiritual sincerity in human history. The plea for the "Straight Path" defines itself by contrasting past nations, separating the way of those God has blessed from those who earned anger or went astray.
