The inheritance verses: an-Nisāʾ 4:11, 4:12 and 4:176
Three verses of sūrat an-Nisāʾ fix most of the shares in Islamic inheritance. Here is what each one covers and which shares the calculator takes from it.
For each verse: a short paraphrase (not a translation), the shares the calculator's engine applies from it — each with an example family that opens in the calculator — and a link to the verse in the Quran reader. Shares not listed here, such as the grandmother's sixth, rest on hadith and scholarly consensus (ijmāʿ).
an-Nisāʾ 4:11 — children and parents
Children and parents: a son takes twice a daughter's portion; one daughter alone takes half, and two or more daughters take two-thirds. Each parent takes a sixth when there is a child; with no child the mother takes a third, or a sixth if there are siblings. All of this comes after any bequest and debt.
