And so it was ordained: she conceived him. She withdrew to a distant place

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَجَآءَهَا
ٱلۡمَخَاضُ
إِلَىٰ
جِذۡعِ
ٱلنَّخۡلَةِ
قَالَتۡ
يَٰلَيۡتَنِي
مِتُّ
قَبۡلَ
هَٰذَا
وَكُنتُ
نَسۡيٗا
مَّنسِيّٗا
٢٣
and, when the pains of childbirth drove her to [cling to] the trunk of a palm tree, she exclaimed, ‘I wish I had been dead and forgotten long before all this!’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَنَادَىٰهَا
مِن
تَحۡتِهَآ
أَلَّا
تَحۡزَنِي
قَدۡ
جَعَلَ
رَبُّكِ
تَحۡتَكِ
سَرِيّٗا
٢٤
but a voice cried to her from below, ‘Do not worry: your Lord has provided a stream at your feet

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَهُزِّيٓ
إِلَيۡكِ
بِجِذۡعِ
ٱلنَّخۡلَةِ
تُسَٰقِطۡ
عَلَيۡكِ
رُطَبٗا
جَنِيّٗا
٢٥
and, if you shake the trunk of the palm tree towards you, it will deliver fresh ripe dates for you,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَكُلِي
وَٱشۡرَبِي
وَقَرِّي
عَيۡنٗاۖ
فَإِمَّا
تَرَيِنَّ
مِنَ
ٱلۡبَشَرِ
أَحَدٗا
فَقُولِيٓ
إِنِّي
نَذَرۡتُ
لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
صَوۡمٗا
فَلَنۡ
أُكَلِّمَ
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
إِنسِيّٗا
٢٦
so eat, drink, be glad, and say to anyone you may see: “I have vowed to the Lord of Mercy to abstain from conversation, and I will not talk to anyone today.”’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَتَتۡ
بِهِۦ
قَوۡمَهَا
تَحۡمِلُهُۥۖ
قَالُواْ
يَٰمَرۡيَمُ
لَقَدۡ
جِئۡتِ
شَيۡـٔٗا
فَرِيّٗا
٢٧
She went back to her people carrying the child, and they said, ‘Mary! You have done something terrible!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَٰٓأُخۡتَ
هَٰرُونَ
مَا
كَانَ
أَبُوكِ
ٱمۡرَأَ
سَوۡءٖ
وَمَا
كَانَتۡ
أُمُّكِ
بَغِيّٗا
٢٨
Sister of Aaron! Your father was not an evil man; your mother was not unchaste!’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَشَارَتۡ
إِلَيۡهِۖ
قَالُواْ
كَيۡفَ
نُكَلِّمُ
مَن
كَانَ
فِي
ٱلۡمَهۡدِ
صَبِيّٗا
٢٩
She pointed at him. They said, ‘How can we converse with an infant?’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
إِنِّي
عَبۡدُ
ٱللَّهِ
ءَاتَىٰنِيَ
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
وَجَعَلَنِي
نَبِيّٗا
٣٠
[But] he said: ‘I am a servant of God. He has granted me the Scripture; made me a prophet;

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَجَعَلَنِي
مُبَارَكًا
أَيۡنَ
مَا
كُنتُ
وَأَوۡصَٰنِي
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ
وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ
مَا
دُمۡتُ
حَيّٗا
٣١
made me blessed wherever I may be. He commanded me to pray, to give alms as long as I live,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَبَرَّۢا
بِوَٰلِدَتِي
وَلَمۡ
يَجۡعَلۡنِي
جَبَّارٗا
شَقِيّٗا
٣٢
to cherish my mother. He did not make me domineering or graceless.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱلسَّلَٰمُ
عَلَيَّ
يَوۡمَ
وُلِدتُّ
وَيَوۡمَ
أَمُوتُ
وَيَوۡمَ
أُبۡعَثُ
حَيّٗا
٣٣
Peace was on me the day I was born, and will be on me the day I die and the day I am raised to life again.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

ذَٰلِكَ
عِيسَى
ٱبۡنُ
مَرۡيَمَۖ
قَوۡلَ
ٱلۡحَقِّ
ٱلَّذِي
فِيهِ
يَمۡتَرُونَ
٣٤
Such was Jesus, son of Mary. [This is] a statement of the Truth about which they are in doubt:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

مَا
كَانَ
لِلَّهِ
أَن
يَتَّخِذَ
مِن
وَلَدٖۖ
سُبۡحَٰنَهُۥٓۚ
إِذَا
قَضَىٰٓ
أَمۡرٗا
فَإِنَّمَا
يَقُولُ
لَهُۥ
كُن
فَيَكُونُ
٣٥
it would not befit God to have a child. He is far above that: when He decrees something, He says only, ‘Be,’ and it is.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَإِنَّ
ٱللَّهَ
رَبِّي
وَرَبُّكُمۡ
فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ
هَٰذَا
صِرَٰطٞ
مُّسۡتَقِيمٞ
٣٦
‘God is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him: that is a straight path.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَٱخۡتَلَفَ
ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ
مِنۢ
بَيۡنِهِمۡۖ
فَوَيۡلٞ
لِّلَّذِينَ
كَفَرُواْ
مِن
مَّشۡهَدِ
يَوۡمٍ
عَظِيمٍ
٣٧
But factions have differed among themselves. What suffering will come to those who obscure the truth when a dreadful Day arrives!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

أَسۡمِعۡ
بِهِمۡ
وَأَبۡصِرۡ
يَوۡمَ
يَأۡتُونَنَا
لَٰكِنِ
ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
فِي
ضَلَٰلٖ
مُّبِينٖ
٣٨
How sharp of hearing, how sharp of sight they will be when they come to Us, although now they are clearly off course! Warn them [Muhammad] of the Day of Remorse when the matter will be decided,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأَنذِرۡهُمۡ
يَوۡمَ
ٱلۡحَسۡرَةِ
إِذۡ
قُضِيَ
ٱلۡأَمۡرُ
وَهُمۡ
فِي
غَفۡلَةٖ
وَهُمۡ
لَا
يُؤۡمِنُونَ
٣٩
for they are heedless and do not believe.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

إِنَّا
نَحۡنُ
نَرِثُ
ٱلۡأَرۡضَ
وَمَنۡ
عَلَيۡهَا
وَإِلَيۡنَا
يُرۡجَعُونَ
٤٠
It is We who will inherit the earth and all who are on it: they will all be returned to Us.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَٱذۡكُرۡ
فِي

نَّبِيًّا

يَٰٓأَبَتِ
لِمَ
تَعۡبُدُ
مَا
لَا
يَسۡمَعُ
وَلَا
يُبۡصِرُ
وَلَا
يُغۡنِي
عَنكَ
شَيۡـٔٗا
٤٢
He said to his father, ‘Father, why do you worship something that can neither hear nor see nor benefit you in any way?

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَٰٓأَبَتِ
إِنِّي
قَدۡ
جَآءَنِي
مِنَ
ٱلۡعِلۡمِ
مَا
لَمۡ
يَأۡتِكَ
فَٱتَّبِعۡنِيٓ
أَهۡدِكَ
صِرَٰطٗا
سَوِيّٗا
٤٣
Father, knowledge that has not reached you has come to me, so follow me: I will guide you to an even path.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَٰٓأَبَتِ
لَا
تَعۡبُدِ
ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنَۖ
إِنَّ
ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنَ
كَانَ
لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
عَصِيّٗا
٤٤
Father, do not worship Satan- Satan has rebelled against the Lord of Mercy.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَٰٓأَبَتِ
إِنِّيٓ
أَخَافُ
أَن
يَمَسَّكَ
عَذَابٞ
مِّنَ
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ
فَتَكُونَ
لِلشَّيۡطَٰنِ
وَلِيّٗا
٤٥
Father, I fear that a punishment from the Lord of Mercy may afflict you and that you may become Satan’s companion [in Hell].’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
أَرَاغِبٌ
أَنتَ
عَنۡ
ءَالِهَتِي
يَٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُۖ
لَئِن
لَّمۡ
تَنتَهِ
لَأَرۡجُمَنَّكَۖ
وَٱهۡجُرۡنِي
مَلِيّٗا
٤٦
His father answered, ‘Abraham, do you reject my gods? I will stone you if you do not stop this. Keep out of my way!’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
سَلَٰمٌ
عَلَيۡكَۖ
سَأَسۡتَغۡفِرُ
لَكَ
رَبِّيٓۖ
إِنَّهُۥ
كَانَ
بِي
حَفِيّٗا

وَمَا
تَدۡعُونَ
مِن
دُونِ
ٱللَّهِ
وَأَدۡعُواْ
رَبِّي
عَسَىٰٓ
أَلَّآ
أَكُونَ
بِدُعَآءِ
رَبِّي
شَقِيّٗا
٤٨
but for now I will leave you, and the idols you all pray to, and I will pray to my Lord and trust that my prayer will not be in vain.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَلَمَّا
ٱعۡتَزَلَهُمۡ
وَمَا
يَعۡبُدُونَ
مِن
دُونِ
ٱللَّهِ
وَهَبۡنَا
لَهُۥٓ
إِسۡحَٰقَ
وَيَعۡقُوبَۖ
وَكُلّٗا
جَعَلۡنَا
نَبِيّٗا
٤٩

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَوَهَبۡنَا
لَهُم
مِّن
رَّحۡمَتِنَا
وَجَعَلۡنَا
لَهُمۡ
لِسَانَ
صِدۡقٍ
عَلِيّٗا
٥٠

لَهُۥ

أَخَاهُ
هَٰرُونَ
نَبِيّٗا
