duty-bound to say nothing about God but the truth, and I have brought you a clear sign from your Lord. Let the Children of Israel go with me.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
إِن
كُنتَ
جِئۡتَ
بِـَٔايَةٖ
فَأۡتِ
بِهَآ
إِن
كُنتَ
مِنَ
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
١٠٦
He said, ‘Produce this sign you have brought, if you are telling the truth.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَأَلۡقَىٰ
عَصَاهُ
فَإِذَا
هِيَ
ثُعۡبَانٞ
مُّبِينٞ
١٠٧
So Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it was a snake, clear to all,

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَنَزَعَ
يَدَهُۥ
فَإِذَا
هِيَ
بَيۡضَآءُ
لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ
١٠٨
and then he pulled out his hand and- lo and behold!- it was white for all to see.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
ٱلۡمَلَأُ
مِن
قَوۡمِ
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
إِنَّ
هَٰذَا
لَسَٰحِرٌ
عَلِيمٞ
١٠٩
The leaders among Pharaoh’s people said, ‘This man is a learned sorcerer!

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يُرِيدُ
أَن
يُخۡرِجَكُم
مِّنۡ
أَرۡضِكُمۡۖ
فَمَاذَا
تَأۡمُرُونَ
١١٠
He means to drive you out of your land!’ Pharaoh said, ‘What do you suggest?’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالُوٓاْ
أَرۡجِهۡ
وَأَخَاهُ
وَأَرۡسِلۡ
فِي
ٱلۡمَدَآئِنِ
حَٰشِرِينَ
١١١
They said, ‘Delay him and his brother for a while, and send messengers to all the cities

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

يَأۡتُوكَ
بِكُلِّ
سَٰحِرٍ
عَلِيمٖ
١١٢
to summon every learned sorcerer to you.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَجَآءَ
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
فِرۡعَوۡنَ
قَالُوٓاْ
إِنَّ
لَنَا
لَأَجۡرًا
إِن
كُنَّا
نَحۡنُ
ٱلۡغَٰلِبِينَ
١١٣
The sorcerers came to Pharaoh and said, ‘Shall we be rewarded if we win?’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
نَعَمۡ
وَإِنَّكُمۡ
لَمِنَ
ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ
١١٤
and he replied, ‘Yes, and you will join my inner court.’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالُواْ
يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ
إِمَّآ
أَن
تُلۡقِيَ
وَإِمَّآ
أَن
نَّكُونَ
نَحۡنُ
ٱلۡمُلۡقِينَ
١١٥
So they said, ‘Moses, will you throw first or shall we?’

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

قَالَ
أَلۡقُواْۖ
فَلَمَّآ
أَلۡقَوۡاْ
سَحَرُوٓاْ
أَعۡيُنَ
ٱلنَّاسِ
وَٱسۡتَرۡهَبُوهُمۡ
وَجَآءُو
بِسِحۡرٍ
عَظِيمٖ
١١٦
He said, ‘You throw,’ and they did, casting a spell on people’s eyes, striking fear into them, and bringing about great sorcery.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

۞ وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ
إِلَىٰ
مُوسَىٰٓ
أَنۡ
أَلۡقِ
عَصَاكَۖ
فَإِذَا
هِيَ
تَلۡقَفُ
مَا
يَأۡفِكُونَ
١١٧
Then We inspired Moses, ‘Throw your staff,’ and- lo and behold!––it devoured their fakery.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَوَقَعَ
ٱلۡحَقُّ
وَبَطَلَ
مَا
كَانُواْ
يَعۡمَلُونَ
١١٨
The truth was confirmed and what they had produced came to nothing:

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

فَغُلِبُواْ
هُنَالِكَ
وَٱنقَلَبُواْ
صَٰغِرِينَ
١١٩
they were defeated there and utterly humiliated.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

وَأُلۡقِيَ
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
سَٰجِدِينَ
١٢٠
The sorcerers fell to their knees
