13 verses

The Quran directly addresses how humanity interacts with its texts and the signs of the unseen world, drawing a sharp line between those who submit to meaning and those who attempt to manufacture it. Scripture itself is categorized by its clarity: definite verses form the cornerstone of the text, while others remain ambiguous (3:7). Rather than a flaw, this ambiguity exposes the reader's inner state.

How is meaning manipulated?

Some groups intentionally fracture the relationship between a word and its intent. The Quran details how certain factions among the Jews would distort the meanings of revealed words through abusive wordplay (4:46). Instead of saying "We hear and obey," they would twist their tongues to say "We hear and disobey," or use ambiguous terms like Raina (look at us) as a veiled insult to disparage the religion. As Musa'id al-Tayyar notes (Sharh Muqaddimah fi Usul al-Tafsir, 140), interpreters often err by falsely claiming a word can carry a specific linguistic meaning to fit a desired context. This linguistic treachery extends to cherry-picking rulings: leaders would tell their followers to accept a judgment if it matched their desires, but to beware if it did not (5:41). Breaking their pledge led to hardened hearts, causing them to forget parts of what they were told and continually distort the meaning of what remained (5:13).

Who pursues hidden meanings?

When confronted with verses that are not entirely explicit, the perverse at heart eagerly hunt for ambiguities (3:7). Their goal is not understanding, but creating trouble by attempting to pin down a specific interpretation of their own design. The Quran asserts that only God knows the true, ultimate reality of these passages. In contrast, those firmly grounded in knowledge respond with acceptance, recognizing that both the clear and the ambiguous come from their Lord. Disbelief often stems from impatience with what cannot be immediately grasped. People deny what they cannot comprehend, especially when the prophecy or the full reality of the matter has not yet been fulfilled before them (10:39).

How does God reveal ultimate reality?

The Quran illustrates the unfolding of meaning through the life of Joseph, who was chosen and taught the specific skill of interpreting dreams (12:6). Meaning in this context is not merely textual analysis, but recognizing the divine reality behind confusing symbols. While the Egyptian king's counselors dismissed his vision of seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green and withered ears of corn, as mere "confusing dreams" and admitted they were unskilled in interpretation (12:43-44), Joseph possessed the knowledge to decode it (12:45). His skill was recognized even by his fellow prisoners, who asked him to interpret their dreams of pressing grapes and carrying bread on their heads for birds to eat (12:36). Yet, the ultimate meaning of Joseph's own life remained veiled for years. God settled him in Egypt and taught him interpretation, asserting that His purpose always prevails, even if most people do not realize it (12:21).

The culmination of meaning occurs not in textual debate, but in the physical realization of God's design. After years of slavery and imprisonment, the disparate symbols of Joseph's life finally align. Raising his parents to the throne as his family bows before him, the long-hidden intent of his childhood vision solidifies into reality. "Father, this is the fulfilment of that dream I had long ago," he declares, acknowledging that his Lord is most subtle in achieving what He will (12:100).

3:7 Ali 'Imran

it is He who has sent this Scripture down to you [Prophet]. Some of its verses are definite in meaning- these are the cornerstone of the Scripture- and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it: it is all from our Lord’- only those with real perception will take heed-

4:46 An-Nisa

Some Jews distort the meaning of [revealed] words: they say, ‘We hear and disobey,’ and ‘Listen,’ [adding the insult] ‘May you not hear,’ and ‘Raina [Look at us],’ twisting it abusively with their tongues so as to disparage religion. If they had said, ‘We hear and obey,’ ‘Listen,’ and ‘Unzurna [Look at us],’ that would have been better and more proper for them. But God has spurned them for their defiance; they believe very little.

5:13 Al-Ma'idah

But they broke their pledge, so We distanced them [from Us] and hardened their hearts. They distort the meaning of [revealed] words and have forgotten some of what they were told to remember: you [Prophet] will always find treachery in all but a few of them. Overlook this and pardon them: God loves those who do good.

5:41 Al-Ma'idah

Messenger, do not be grieved by those who race to surpass one another in disbelief- those who say with their mouths, ‘We believe,’ but have no faith in their hearts, and the Jews who listen eagerly to lies and to those who have not even met you, who distort the meanings of [revealed] words and say [to each other], ‘If you are given this ruling, accept it, but if you are not, then beware!’––if God intends some people to be so misguided, you will be powerless against God on their behalf. These are the ones whose hearts God does not intend to cleanse- a disgrace for them in this world, and then a heavy punishment in the Hereafter-

10:39 Yunus

But they are denying what they cannot comprehend- its prophecy has yet to be fulfilled for them. In the same way, those before them refused to believe- see what was the end of those evildoers!

12:6 Yusuf

This is about how your Lord will choose you, teach you to interpret dreams, and perfect His blessing on you and the House of Jacob, just as He perfected it earlier on your forefathers Abraham and Isaac: your Lord is all knowing and wise.’

12:21 Yusuf

The Egyptian who bought him said to his wife, ‘Look after him well! He may be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ In this way We settled Joseph in that land and later taught him how to interpret dreams: God always prevails in His purpose, though most people do not realize it.

12:36 Yusuf

Two young men went into prison alongside him. One of them said, ‘I dreamed that I was pressing grapes’; the other said, ‘I dreamed that I was carrying bread on my head and that the birds were eating it.’ [They said], ‘Tell us what this means- we can see that you are a knowledgeable man.’

12:43 Yusuf

The king said, ‘I dreamed about seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones; seven green ears of corn and [seven] others withered. Counsellors, if you can interpret dreams, tell me the meaning of my dream.’

12:44 Yusuf

They said, ‘These are confusing dreams and we are not skilled at dream-interpretation,’

12:45 Yusuf

but the prisoner who had been freed at last remembered [Joseph] and said, ‘I shall tell you what this means. Give me leave to go.’

12:100 Yusuf

and took them up to [his] throne. They all bowed down before him and he said, ‘Father, this is the fulfilment of that dream I had long ago. My Lord has made it come true and has been gracious to me- He released me from prison and He brought you here from the desert- after Satan sowed discord between me and my brothers. My Lord is most subtle in achieving what He will; He is the All Knowing, the Truly Wise.

12:101 Yusuf

My Lord! You have given me authority; You have taught me something about the interpretation of dreams; Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Let me die in true devotion to You. Join me with the righteous.’
