About Surah Al-Jinn

In the tenth year of his prophethood, shortly before traveling to Ta'if, the Prophet (ﷺ) recited near the 'Ukaz marketplace. Unseen listeners overheard him and converted, a hidden miracle giving this 28-verse Makkan chapter its name, Al-Jinn, and its alternate title, Qul Uhiya ("Say: It has been revealed"). Revealed fortieth, between Al-A'raf and Ya-Sin, it serves to prove his prophethood.

The text opens with the jinn grasping the message and affirming Allah's absolute oneness, free of spouses or children. It then shifts to a disruption in the cosmic order, describing how meteoric projectiles now bar these beings from eavesdropping on the heavens. Advancing through the chapter, the verses classify the jinn into righteous and unrighteous ranks, dismantling the practice of worshipping false gods.

The argument concludes by stripping away claims that creation can know what is hidden. The final verses establish that knowledge of the unseen belongs solely to Allah, who shares it only with His messengers—rendering soothsaying empty and warning the polytheists of their impending regret at the final judgment.

72:1

Say [Prophet], ‘It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn once listened in and said, “We have heard a wondrous Quran,

that gives guidance to the right path, and we have come to believe it––We shall never set up partners with our Lord––

Outrageous things have been said about God by the foolish among us,

Men have sought refuge with the jinn in the past, but they only misguided them further.
