When the sun stands over the Kaaba
Twice a year the sun passes directly over the Kaaba at noon in Makkah. At that moment the sun is in the qibla direction from every place where it is daytime: face the sun and you face the Kaaba. A vertical stick's shadow then points directly away from the qibla.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the Qibla in Ilesa with a compass?
Turn to a bearing of 64°, measured clockwise from true north. A magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which can differ from true north by a few degrees or more depending on where you are, so correct the reading for the local magnetic declination.
Why does the Qibla from Ilesa look different on a flat map?
The Qibla follows the shortest route over the globe, a great circle. On most flat maps that route is drawn as a curve, so a straight line on the map toward Makkah can point in a different direction from 64°.
How far is Ilesa from the Kaaba?
Ilesa is 4,062 km from the Kaaba in Makkah, measured along the shortest path over the Earth's surface.
