Turning one's face toward the East or West does not constitute true goodness on its own. Instead, the Quran pairs theological belief in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets with the concrete act of giving away wealth, however much the giver might personally cherish it (2:177). Alongside keeping up the prayer, the payment of prescribed alms anchors a Muslim's obligations, forming a physical and financial discipline where believers bow their heads in worship alongside those who bow theirs (2:43). Financial sacrifice is so central to the faith's mechanics that it serves as a substitute when physical rituals are interrupted; if a person falls ill during the sacred pilgrimage or suffers an ailment preventing its completion, feeding the poor stands as a valid compensation (2:196). Through these regular payments, any good that believers store up for themselves will be found with God, who sees everything they do (2:110).
Who holds a right to this wealth?
When asked what should be given, the Quran outlines specific circles of responsibility, radiating outward from the household: parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers (2:215). These categories explicitly expand to include beggars and the financial liberation of those held in bondage (2:177). A distinct emphasis falls on a specific group of the impoverished: those entirely occupied in God's way who cannot travel the land for trade. Because of their dignified self-restraint, an unknowing observer might mistake them for wealthy individuals, as they refuse to beg persistently (2:273). The obligation to support these vulnerable groups extends beyond a single annual tax. As Ibn Kathir notes (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2/43), early Muslims understood from verse 2:177 that there are moral rights upon a person's wealth that exist alongside the formal, calculated requirements of prescribed alms.
What cancels the reward of giving?
The Quran establishes that the manner of giving is just as critical as the wealth itself. A kind word and forgiveness are explicitly better than a charitable deed followed by hurtful language (2:263). Believers are warned not to cancel out their charity by reminding recipients of their benevolence. The text compares a person who gives merely to be seen by people, rather than out of belief in the Last Day, to a rock covered with a thin layer of earth: a heavy rain falls and leaves the stone completely bare, washing away any supposed spiritual benefit (2:264). Conversely, those who spend their wealth in God’s cause without causing subsequent hurt will face no fear, nor will they grieve (2:262). While giving openly is acknowledged as a good deed, keeping charity secret and distributing it to the needy in private is better, actively atoning for some of the giver’s past bad deeds (2:271).
When the believers ask what exact portion of their wealth they ought to part with, they are instructed to give what they can spare (2:219). Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi points out (Mahasin al-Ta'wil, 5/404) that this standard of releasing surplus wealth formed the primary practice of the early community before fixed assessments were later instituted. The Quran insists that the ultimate beneficiary of this release is not the recipient, but the giver. The act is never a loss of assets, but a transfer of ownership to a permanent account. Whatever charity is given benefits the giver's own soul, provided it is done for the sake of God, where whatever is spent will be repaid in full, and no one will be wronged (2:272).

Keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and bow your heads [in worship] with those who bow theirs.
Keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms. Whatever good you store up for yourselves, you will find it with God: He sees everything you do.
Goodness does not consist in turning your face towards East or West. The truly good are those who believe in God and the Last Day, in the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who give away some of their wealth, however much they cherish it, to their relatives, to orphans, the needy, travellers and beggars, and to liberate those in bondage; those who keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; who keep pledges whenever they make them; who are steadfast in misfortune, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are true, and it is they who are aware of God.
Complete the pilgrimages, major and minor, for the sake of God. If you are prevented [from doing so], then [send] whatever offering for sacrifice you can afford, and do not shave your headsuntil the offering has reached the place of sacrifice. If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, he should compensate by fasting, or feeding the poor, or offering sacrifice. When you are in safety, anyone wishing to take a break between the minor pilgrimage and the major one must make whatever offering he can afford. If he lacks the means, he should fast for three days during the pilgrimage, and seven days on his return, making ten days in all. This applies to those whose household is not near the Sacred Mosque. Always be mindful of God, and be aware that He is stern in His retribution.
They ask you [Prophet] what they should give. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.
They ask you [Prophet] about intoxicants and gambling: say, ‘There is great sin in both, and some benefit for people: the sin is greater than the benefit.’ They ask you what they should give: say, ‘Give what you can spare.’ In this way, God makes His messages clear to you, so that you may reflect
Those who spend their wealth in God’s cause, and do not follow their spending with reminders of their benevolence or hurtful words, will have their rewards with their Lord: no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
A kind word and forgiveness is better than a charitable deed followed by hurtful [words]: God is self-sufficient, forbearing.
You who believe, do not cancel out your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth only to be seen by people, not believing in God and the Last Day. Such a person is like a rock with earth on it: heavy rain falls and leaves it completely bare. Such people get no rewards for their works: God does not guide the disbelievers.
If you give charity openly, it is good, but if you keep it secret and give to the needy in private, that is better for you, and it will atone for some of your bad deeds: God is well aware of all that you do.
It is not for you [Prophet] to guide them; it is God who guides whoever He will. Whatever charity you give benefits your own soul, provided you do it for the sake of God: whatever you give will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
[Give] to those needy who are wholly occupied in God’s way and cannot travel in the land [for trade]. The unknowing might think them rich because of their self-restraint, but you will recognize them by their characteristic of not begging persistently. God is well aware of any good you give.
Those who give, out of their own possessions, by night and by day, in private and in public, will have their reward with their Lord: no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
God blights usury, but blesses charitable deeds with multiple increase: He does not love the ungrateful sinner.
Those who believe, do good deeds, keep up the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms will have their reward with their Lord: no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
None of you [believers] will attain true piety unless you give out of what you cherish: whatever you give, God knows about it very well.
who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-
Those who are miserly with what God has granted them out of His grace should not think that it is good for them; on the contrary, it is bad for them. Whatever they meanly withhold will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection. It is God who will inherit the heavens and earth: God is well aware of everything you do.
who are miserly and order other people to be the same, hiding the bounty God has given them. We have prepared a humiliating torment for such ungrateful people.
[Nor does He like those] who spend their wealth to show off, who do not believe in Him or the Last Day. Whoever has Satan as his companion has an evil companion!
What harm would it do them to believe in God and the Last Day, and give charitably from the sustenance God has given them? God knows them well.
Never should a believer kill another believer, except by mistake. If anyone kills a believer by mistake he must free one Muslim slave and pay compensation to the victim’s relatives, unless they charitably forgo it; if the victim belonged to a people at war with you but is a believer, then the compensation is only to free a believing slave; if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his relatives, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means to do this must fast for two consecutive months by way of repentance to God: God is all knowing, all wise.
There is no good in most of their secret talk, only in commanding charity, or good, or reconciliation between people. To anyone who does these things, seeking to please God, We shall give a rich reward;
God took a pledge from the Children of Israel. We made twelve leaders arise among them, and God said, ‘I am with you: if you keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, believe in My messengers and support them, and lend God a good loan, I will wipe out your sins and admit you into Gardens graced with flowing streams. Any of you who now ignore this [pledge] will be far from the right path.’
In the Torah We prescribed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, an equal wound for a wound: if anyone forgoes this out of charity, it will serve as atonement for his bad deeds. Those who do not judge according to what God has revealed are doing grave wrong.
Your true allies are God, His Messenger, and the believers- those who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and bow down in worship.
When the [four] forbidden months are over, wherever you encounter the idolaters, kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post; but if they turn [to God], maintain the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms, let them go on their way, for God is most forgiving and merciful.
The only ones who should tend God’s places of worship are those who believe in God and the Last Day, who keep up the prayer, who pay the prescribed alms, and who fear no one but God: such people may hope to be among the rightly guided.
Some of them find fault with you [Prophet] regarding the distribution of alms: they are content if they are given a share, but angry if not.
Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.
The believers, both men and women, support each other; they order what is right and forbid what is wrong; they keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms; they obey God and His Messenger. God will give His mercy to such people: God is almighty and wise.
There are some among them who pledged themselves to God, saying, ‘If God gives us some of His bounty, we shall certainly give alms and be righteous,’
yet when He did give them some of His bounty, they became mean and turned obstinately away.
It is they who criticize the believers who give freely and those who can only give a little with great effort: they scoff at such people, but it is God who scoffs at them- a painful punishment awaits them.
In order to cleanse and purify them [Prophet], accept a gift out of their property [to make amends] and pray for them- your prayer will be a comfort to them. God is all hearing, all knowing.
if they spend a little or a lot for God’s cause, if they traverse a mountain pass, all this is recorded to their credit so that God can reward them in accordance with the best of their deeds.
God has given some of you more provision than others. Those who have been given more are unwilling to pass their provision on to the slaves they possess so that they become their equals. How can they refuse to acknowledge God’s blessings?
We made all of them leaders, guiding others by Our command, and We inspired them to do good works, to keep up the prayer, and to give alms: they were Our true worshippers.
We have made camels part of God’s sacred rites for you. There is much good in them for you, so invoke God’s name over them as they are lined up for sacrifice, then, when they have fallen down dead, feed yourselves and those who do not ask, as well as those who do. We have subjected them to you in this way so that you may be thankful.
those who, when We establish them in the land, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, command what is right, and forbid what is wrong: God controls the outcome of all events.
Strive hard for God as is His due: He has chosen you and placed no hardship in your religion, the faith of your forefather Abraham. God has called you Muslims––both in the past and in this [message]––so that the Messenger can bear witness about you and so that you can bear witness about other people. So keep up the prayer, give the prescribed alms, and seek refuge in God: He is your protector––an excellent protector and an excellent helper.
men who are not distracted, either by commerce or profit, from remembering God, keeping up the prayer, and paying the prescribed alms, fearing a day when hearts and eyes will turn over.
No blame will be attached to the blind, the lame, the sick.Whether you eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts, houses you have the keys for, or any of your friends’ houses, you will not be blamed: you will not be blamed whether you eat in company or separately. When you enter any house, greet one another with a greeting of blessing and goodness as enjoined by God. This is how God makes His messages clear to you so that you may understand.
They are those who are neither wasteful nor niggardly when they spend, but keep to a just balance;
who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and believe firmly in the life to come.
So give their due to the near relative, the needy, and the wayfarer- that is best for those whose goal is God’s approval: these are the ones who will prosper.
Whatever you lend out in usury to gain value through other people’s wealth will not increase in God’s eyes, but whatever you give in charity, in your desire for God’s approval, will earn multiple rewards.
who keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and are certain of the Hereafter:
For men and women who are devoted to God- believing men and women, obedient men and women, truthful men and women, steadfast men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, chaste men and women, men and women who remember God often- God has prepared forgiveness and a rich reward.
and when they are told, ‘Give to others out of what God has provided for you,’ the disbelievers say to the believers, ‘Why should we feed those that God could feed if He wanted? You must be deeply misguided.’
