20 verses
Before the heavens and earth took their current forms, the sky was smoke. The Creator addressed this primordial mass, commanding it and the earth, "Come into being, willingly or not," to which they responded, "We come willingly" (41:11). The Quranic description of the cosmos is a demonstration of deliberate authority. Abu Bakr al-Jazairi notes (Aysar al-Tafasir, 2/35) that the physical emergence of the heavens and the earth, along with the transition between darkness and light, serves as the direct imperative to recognize and praise the One who brought them into existence. Across twenty verses touching closely on the universe's creation, the text builds an architecture of precise orbits, expanding vastness, and relative time.
How did the heavens and earth form?
The physical origin of the universe is described as a state of unity that was subsequently broken apart. The text asks those who deny the Creator to consider that "the heavens and the earth used to be joined together and that We ripped them apart" (21:30). Following this separation, the formation of the cosmos involved immense structural power and ongoing expansion, stated directly as, "We built the heavens with Our power and made them vast" (51:47). Within two periods or "Days," seven heavens were formed and assigned their distinct orders, with the nearest heaven secured and beautifully illuminated (41:12). From this initial tearing apart of matter, water was established as the absolute base for biology, making every living thing from it (21:30).
What sustains the celestial bodies?
Rather than a static dome, the sky is depicted in continuous, regulated motion. The heavens were raised up "with no visible supports" by a Creator who then established Himself on the throne (13:2). In this suspended space, the sun and moon are subjected to pursue their exact courses for an appointed duration. Each celestial body—the sun, the moon, the succession of night and day—is described as "floating in its orbit" (21:33). The placement of constellations in the sky provides a secure framework, accompanied by a radiant sun and an illuminating moon (25:61). This specific machinery of the cosmos was not set in motion without a true purpose. He regulates all things and makes the signs clear so people might be certain of meeting their Lord (13:2). To ground human life, the sun was made a shining radiance and the moon's phases were determined precisely so that humanity might calculate time and know the number of years (10:5).
How does cosmic time work?
The earthly measure of years is explicitly contrasted with the scale of time experienced beyond our world. The administration of the universe, running everything from the heavens down to the earth, ascends back up "on a Day that will measure a thousand years in your reckoning" (32:5). When people challenged the Prophet to hasten a promised punishment, they were reminded of this severe cosmic relativity, where a single day with the Lord matches a millennium of human calculation (22:47). The flexibility of earthly time is further illustrated in the physical world by the sleepers in the cave, who remained in a preserved state while outside, three hundred and nine years passed by (18:25).
Beyond the mechanical structure of orbits, separating masses, and invisible supports, the entire universe relies on a sustaining source. The physical glow of the sun and the reflected light of the moon are outmatched by the reality that God is the Light of the heavens and the earth (24:35). This ultimate illumination is likened to a niche containing a lamp inside a glass, glittering like a star, fueled by a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it.

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ ضِيَآءً وَٱلْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
It is He who made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light, determining phases for it so that you might know the number of years and how to calculate time. God did not create all these without a true purpose; He explains His signs to those who understand.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ
It is God who raised up the heavens with no visible supports and then established Himself on the throne; He has subjected the sun and the moon each to pursue its course for an appointed time; He regulates all things, and makes the revelations clear so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord;
وَلَبِثُوا۟ فِى كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلَـٰثَ مِا۟ئَةٍ سِنِينَ وَٱزْدَادُوا۟ تِسْعًا
[Some say], ‘The sleepers stayed in their cave for three hundred years,’ some added nine more.
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
Are the disbelievers not aware that the heavens and the earth used to be joined together and that We ripped them apart, that We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe?
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
It is He who created night and day, the sun and the moon, each floating in its orbit.
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِٱلْعَذَابِ وَلَن يُخْلِفَ ٱللَّهُ وَعْدَهُۥ ۚ وَإِنَّ يَوْمًا عِندَ رَبِّكَ كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ
They will challenge you [Prophet] to hasten the punishment. God will not fail in His promise- a Day with your Lord is like a thousand years by your reckoning.
۞ ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ كَمِشْكَوٰةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ فِى زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّىٌّ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِىٓءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it- light upon light- God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything-
تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَٰجًا وَقَمَرًا مُّنِيرًا
Exalted is He who put constellations in the heavens, a radiant light, and an illuminating moon-
يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥٓ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ
He runs everything, from the heavens to the earth, and everything will ascend to Him in the end, on a Day that will measure a thousand years in your reckoning.
ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَهِىَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلْأَرْضِ ٱئْتِيَا طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا قَالَتَآ أَتَيْنَا طَآئِعِينَ
Then He turned to the sky, which was smoke––He said to it and the earth, ‘Come into being, willingly or not,’ and they said, ‘We come willingly’––
فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَاتٍ فِى يَوْمَيْنِ وَأَوْحَىٰ فِى كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمْرَهَا ۚ وَزَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ وَحِفْظًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ
and in two Days He formed seven heavens, and assigned an order to each. We have made the nearest one beautifully illuminated and secure. Such is the design of the Almighty, the All Knowing.
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
We built the heavens with Our power and made them vast,
ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ
The sun and the moon follow their calculated courses;
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ
He has raised up the sky. He has set the balance
يَـٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ إِنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَن تَنفُذُوا۟ مِنْ أَقْطَارِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنفُذُوا۟ ۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ
Jinn and mankind, if you can pass beyond the regions of heaven and earth, then do so: you will not pass without Our authority.
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years.
أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍ طِبَاقًا
Have you ever wondered how God created seven heavens, one above the other,
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ
When the stars are dimmed
إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ
When the sun is shrouded in darkness,
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ
when the seas boil over,
